Copy covers for practice
-
Thank you much @lizardillo!
I find these master studies extremely helpful in pushing my skills and exploring brush strokes I’m not comfortable with quite yet. The goal is to absorb as much as possible and use techniques from these amazing artists in my own work, which is very hard.
Art is so hard!

OH wow @Jeremy-Ross .. I haven't looked at these in while. You are getting SO good. I had to keep checking to see which were the originals. I love seeing your progress! Keep sharing!!
-
Thank you @annaaronson, will do! I really enjoy doing these studies and would like to increase the frequency of making them for practice.

I took a small side step from the cover, and went with my favourite illustration from The Very Cranky Bear. This is my kids favourite book, and I just love this moment.
I sometimes find it hard to step out of my photorealistic box, and simplify my shapes and details. That lines can be simple, yet speak all the implied words without being busy. I struggled and strive for this, but i always end up adding too much. This exercise was great, as Nicks work is so simple, yet full.
I used graphite pencils, a mechanical with a 2b lead, a 4b a 6b and a 9b graph wood pencil, I used a power eraser, and a blending stump as well.
I didn’t time how long it took, as I used to be much faster with my Right hand, and I have to celebrate my wins with my left rather than see that it’s still not quite up to where my Right used to be.

Love it @angelinakizz! And for what it’s worth, I can’t tell it was done with non-dominate hand.

@jeremy-ross very nice! that book is so beautifully done.
-
Thanks @asyas_illos! Completely agree!
-
@jeremy-ross Pretty cool man!

@angelinakizz I love the white outlines and in-lines. I've included some in my Tiger work (not yet posted). Nice study though.

I’ve been so busy with work and family that I have abandoned my creative practice for a couple of months…
What better way to warm back up to a creative practice than yet another master copy?
This time I decided to copy the cover of The Art of Luca book, painted by the amazingly talented Daniel Lopez Munoz, which I thought would be equally difficult and fun to recreate.
Original on top,
Without further ado…
-
@Jeremy-Ross nice!
-
Thanks @Asyas_illos!
-
@Jeremy-Ross I actually prefer yours lols!

Hi All -
I’m back with another master study! You might recognize this cover from The Art of Brave, illustrated by the uber-talented Steve Pilcher.
This took me about 2 hours, and although it’s not my best master study, it was certainly good practice nonetheless.
Top original, bottom my study.

Hi All!
I really love this Toy Story cover from The Art of Pixar book, volume II
Original art from Pixar on top, my master study on bottom.
I only used 1 brush, gouache smooth natural from Max Pack brushes. I had a blast with this one.
Enjoy!

Hi Everyone! It’s time for another master copy, this time from the talented debut author/illustrator, Breanna Carzoo!
I really enjoyed her book, Lou, especially the method of cut paper shapes. Looking forward to her next book, Greenlight, to be released on July 18, 2023.

@Jeremy-Ross beautiful!
-
Thank you @Larue!

@Jeremy-Ross you inspired me to start in a cover as well. Good practice without the debilitating doubt about my own ideas. It got me creating again. Thanks!!
