So, for inktober I did this piece:
      original.jpg
but I haven't really been satisfied with it, and I've learned some things, so I attempted to redo it with some of what I learned from Slowvember and the How to Draw Everything Class:
      overgrown-redux.jpg

I think I like the point of view better (I realize I could work on the construction), and I like that you can actually see that the harpy figure is on the front of a doorknob, but I'm not really satisfied with the value composition. For the 2nd piece, I wanted to kind of make the ivy leaves negative space by not giving them any color at all and making everything happening in the shadows, but the values still look kind of flat. What would you suggest? darkening the doorlate, maybe? pushing the values of the knob back up to nearly white?

I probably won't answer any posts until I get back online on Monday, but any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Just in case the intent isn't clear, the intent of the poece is for the viewer to feel like they've discovered something hidden underneath the leaves

@JoannaH I feel like you could add more leaves around the image to frame it more. It might give a stronger feel of it being hidden?

@Nyrryl-Cadiz Here is a version of the pic with more shadows under the leaves:

                overgrown-redux2.jpg

@theprairiefox I will experiment with that. I definitely could have used more time at the thumbnail study phase :smiling_face_with_open_mouth_closed_eyes:

@JoannaH said in Attempt to redo Inktober piece using new knowledge:

I kind of preferred the black ivy from the original. If you paired the original black leaves with a nice bright white highlight on top of the knob (with some white edges on the harpy figure) I think it would really pop 🙂

Much improved after inktober, though! It's amazing how much that challenge teaches everyone 😃

i want to add here that in your new perspective the keyhole should be hidden slightly. the distance between the doorknob and the keyhole are now longer than what you showed in the first image. other than that i like both images 😃

@Braden-Hallett Hmm, I think you're right about the black leaves. Also, thanks for the compliment!

@Inge-Permentier I'll look into that. Thank you
