Alright I wasn't going to participate until I was "better at art" but then I thought screw it just throw your hat in because it's good practice in general. Nightfall means story time at our house. Imagine the stars dropped out of the sky to listen in?

final NIGHTFALL REALLY SMALL svs feb 2020.jpg

This was done in carbon paper transfer, watercolour and pencil (and only digital to adjust colour/contrast issue because my image was larger than my scanner, so it didn't scan exactly). I have become so accustomed to digital in being able to zoom in and add detail that I was unprepared to design this way, however thanks to @demotlj and @burvantill 🙂 who so kindly helped me out, I was able to adjust things at the end. I still have lots of improving to go.

This work was inspired by the thought that only from earth's perspective do stars fall across the heavens. Also I wanted to tell a story about this adventurer kid who imagines steering his sights to the greater unknown. 🙂

Painting the stars each nightfall is a long job, but enjoyable!

So I was watching last month’s crit while working on my submission for this month when I realized I was doing another standard point of view. So I started over and came up with this piece which was quite challenging for me. But I am happy with how it turned out.

This is my first illustration submission. It's a bit of a different style from most of the work on here, but I love this community, the podcasts, the courses, feedback, etc, so I thought I'd start entering the monthly contests. I considered adding color but decided to keep it in black and white. It was done originally in pen and ink, traditionally, then I scanned it and added a few digital revisions.

It's about the things we try to protect our kids from, their imaginings at night, sure, but more powerfully, the hurt of the world. As a foster parent, this is something I experience a lot-- trying to shield these little ones from further trauma.

Here's my first ever entry - created with watercolour and oil pastels. My image is part of a story about a boy who has gone to bed poorly. Illustration is not something I'm used to doing so it will be a learning curve for me - looking forward to getting out of my comfort zone though and trying all the classes and joining in the forum.
