Anybody planning on making a comics/story project RE: Jake's recent YT vid?
-
Hello everyone, I'm a new face! (Please call me Ame!) I've been around the forum as a lurker but I am finally wriggling out of my rock haha!
So I've recently watched Jake's video about making a story project and it was enough motivation to light on my butt into action. I've finally decided to make a short story I have into a comic project!
I was wondering if anybody else is gonna do the same thing? Are you planning a small project right now? I'd love to know especially if you're doing comics too! Thanks guys!

I really want to make my husband's story into a comic!! But I'm lacking the skills at the moment... and he's still polishing it so it might be a while... Best wishes for your project!... It's 1:46 am.... what am I doing.... I'll just keep drawing...
-
@Daisy Woow! Your stuff is great! I really love your work on instagram! Maybe you should just go for it though XD
I'm still learning art myself and I only found the confidence to try drawing more early this year. Comics might be a good medium to practice art ^^

Hi I’m planning on making a webcomic it’s pretty lowkey. It’s not a small project but it’s a simple story. It’s about food
-
@ArtofAleksey That sounds cool Aleksey! I'd be interested to see more! Is it like a 4-panel comic? Or one with narrative?
I'm planning of posting my progress here, so please feel free to share your work as well!
-
@ameliori I’ll start it once I move into my new apartment but it’s a narrative comic. Kind of episodic. Although I’m gonna try to make it where people can jump in at any point in the story.

Welcome Ame! I was just finishing a short comic (a 14pg adaptation from the Eragon books) when Jake's videos started coming out, so I felt super fired up that I was going down the right path! That motivation has me putting more energy into a graphic novel idea I've been kicking around for a couple years (fell into that world building trap Jake talked about...oops). So I've been putting aside time each day to write the story outline, THEN I'll figure out what I need my characters to be to fit the story.
Making the short comic first helped me discover I LOVE the graphic novel process: scripting, figuring out panels, dialogue, etc. And I prefer using lots of panels to tell a story more than creating one illustration for a scene like in a children's book.
I'm documenting my progress over on my Patreon, but I'll probably be checking in here on the forums too!

I have been trying to figure out how to do my own 'graphic novel' ala Allison Bechdel my shero..... just trying to figure out how to do it and this place has been a huge help!
-
@ameliori aww, thank you!
Can't wait to see what you make!

I am! I have three short stories I've been working on actually, so need to finish those up! But then I want to use some of his ideas for writing new ones.
One is a silly conversation I heard with classmates that I transposed into a fantasy setting, one is about a space cop dealing with a dinosaur (been working on that for a while before I knew Skull Chaser has dinos!), and the other is a conflict between two mer-men.

@carriecopadraws I just read your Eragon comic! I loved the timing and visuals on it - great job! Do you have another short story in mind before your Cathedral?
That's also really good that you love all the stages! I struggle with some, but I wouldn't say I dislike any? Maybe flatting. And drawing crowds lol. Also - how did you get that really cool page-turning effect on your website?
-
@Michael-Howe I don't think anyone likes drawing crowds! I actually like flatting; I find it meditative. Like putting a Lego set together.
I will probably do another short comic while I'm writing/planning out the Cathedral story. Gotta keep that momentum going and make a little progress each day! Like Jake Parker said, you can't edit something that doesn't exist. Maybe I'll do a scene from the Redwall or Fablehaven middle grade books?
The comic reader on my website is a Wordpress plugin called Real3DFlipbook. You upload a PDF and it makes a nice viewing experience with turning pages. I also figured out how to show my logo on the side so it looks polished.

Fellow lurker here first time actually interacting with the forum.
I had recently started an anthology of short horror/thriller comics. Jake's video helped to assure me to continue and has gotten me to work a little more consistently on it i'm only one into it and already see a lot of progress and improvement in my work.
-
@carriecopadraws Hahaha probably true about crowds. Sometimes I find it meditative, too, other times just boring.
Yes, keep making progress!!!
Ooooh - I like Redwall! Haven't read Fablehaven.

I know this thread is a few months old, but I just recently noticed it so I figured I'd post. I am also in the process of creating a comic. I was thinking about doing this for some time, but watching Jake's YouTube video "You Need a Product Not a Project" was definitely one of the things that prompted me to finally tackle it.
I'm part of the way into the project at this point, and I can say that so far it's been a really fun and enlightening experience. There are so many details to take care of with a comic and so its nice to move through these different steps and see things progress.
If you're interested, I am documenting the process on my website. (I don't usually show works-in-progress, but I'm trying to do more of that so that's another anterior motive with this project.) I'll also be posting periodically on social media, but the more thorough information is on my site.

Hey welcome Ame!! I do comics! I got a magical cartoony series right here!
https://tapas.io/series/Evil-Villain-Academy-here's one of my recent fav pages.
If anybody else here makes comics I'll check em out! Comics are the best,
Oh also, where's this video of Jake's your talking about? I really wanna check that out!! -
I'm glad there is a group of us here for comics and not just children's illustration! I started on my comic about 6 years ago but still have not gotten very far. I definitely fell into the world building trap. I also wanted it to look modern and professional so I used Manga studio and photoshop which I had to teach myself. I have always been a pen and ink girl. Every time Jake comes out with a new video on comics I always feel like he is speaking to me directly and I get motivated again. This is from my comic: Cyterna

Hello, after seeing this discussion and the comics posted I wish to make (at least) a short comic, and this post is to keep myself accountable.
