      Hi.

Has anyone bought the new "Children's Picture Books: The Art of Visual Storytelling" by Martin Salisbury and Morag Styles (2 Edition) and has also read through Martin's 1st 2004 "Illustrating Children's Books: Creating Pictures for Publication"? I'd like to make the assumption that I can but the 2nd edition without buying the first -though I know the first is very good. Is my assumption correct, can I just buy the 2nd edition.

      Thanks guys,

@Heather-Boyd I have never read the 1rst edition. I purchased the 2rd edition yesterday. I just assume it is an update from the 1st edtion. I could be wrong though.

I have an edition of "Children's Picture Books: The Art of Visual Storytelling" from 2012. It doesn't say what edition it is, so I assume it's the first. I think, therefore, that the book you're describing is a different book from the 2004 one. But I'm not sure.

Now I'm curious as to what the second edition has that the first doesn't!

@xin-li Ok, let me know! And that way we will help @Heather-Boyd and others decide which one they would like most. Mine has a history of illustration, especially the more avant garde types of books.

Hi, I have been trying to find out the same question... if Martin Salisbury's 'Children's Picturebooks Second Edition: The Art of Visual Storytelling, 2020' is exactly the same as the first edition: 'Children's Picturebooks: The Art of Visual Storytelling, 2012' but with an extra chapter and extra case studies, or is it quite different? I can't find this information online. If you have both books, please can you tell me if the content is exactly the same, or do you recommend one over the other... I dont know whether to buy the new edition, or if they're very different, to buy them both...Thanks in advance!

My second edition of children's picturebooks has arrived. Below is the table of content, for those who are interested.
I have not read the 1st edition, so I could not answer the question about how different they are.

Thanks, @xin-li! It looks like there is the same structure, but considerable differences in content compared with the 2012 edition. The case studies seem to be different all the way through, there is an added chapter on non-fiction, and instead of a section on ebooks there is a section on digital content.

@LauraA wow. it looks like it is worth to have both edition, since case studies are the core of the book.

I am a slightly disappointed that the case studies are not more in-depth. I completely felling love with Anuska Allepuz's art work. But I have a hard time finding out more about her process on Internet - the content in the book does not give enough information on how she actually produce these gorgeous images.

Here is the table of contents from the 2012 edition. The Beatrice Alemagna case study, A Lion in Paris, had about a page of type and four images. I agree that it's not very in depth. I think it's intended more as a survey book.

Thanks for introducing me to Anuska Allepuz! Such lovely work, and I'd like to know more as well!

P.S. Oops, the photos loaded in reverse order!

@xin-li @LauraA Would you be able to tell what the case studies look like?
Is it something like this blogpost shared by Rebecca Green on her last picture book?
                                Thanks!

@marine I'd say it's not nearly that detailed. That's a nice blog post!

These my my 3 books and an interior shot of them.

So without having the 2004 or 2012 book I do believe this 2020 book is the second edition of the original 2004 not the 2012 which I think is a separate book.

Sorry my mistake this is the second addition of the 2012 book, you were right. But I found the 2004 one and I am confused if I should get that one as well? Though itโ€™s 2004.
