Ipad Pro Question
-
I was wondering if anyone could answer my iPad pro question (Ace?) - is the Apple Pencil accurate? - before i got the cintiq i was using iPad air and Procreate - it was very difficult because all of the styli (and i have many including both wacoms) had problems and i could never draw a line exactly where i was intending to draw - the Hexa Jaja was the best but it scratched the screen i think (could have been my 4 year old artist being creative though ) - if i would draw with the stylus straight up and down they would all do well - but that is not a pleasant way to draw - would you say the apple pencil is as accurate and natural to use as the cintiq? - thanks for your help

It's super accurate. I have a Cintiq and it feels more accurate and there's less parallax on the iPad than my Cintiq. I've had it for a month now and drawn/painted on it for maybe 100-120 hours and I'd definitely feel comfortable recommending it.

@Kevin-Longueil You'll definitely want to have a read through the free Procreate 3.0 manual on iBooks. Some of the shortcuts and stuff have changed since the previous versions. It's a quick read but getting familiar with the shortcuts makes life a lot faster. I'm not sure there's anything I'd change about the drawing side of things on the iPad Pro. Here's a link - https://itunes.apple.com/au/book/procreate-artists-handbook/id1069228674?mt=13
Yeah, the Pencil top thing is easy to lose and you'll need to buy another Thunderbolt cable if you aren't comfortable with charging the thing in the bottom of the iPad (I've plugged it in the bottom once and that was to pair it at the beginning and I haven't since). The charge on the Pencil is fine. I get a good 12 hours drawing out of it and if it does run out (although I just plug it in every night), it charges ridiculously quickly.
But the actual experience of drawing on it is the best I've ever had. I initially thought it was a placebo thing but I've put enough time in with it now to have clarity.
The only bug I've found with it and I've reported it to Apple and nobody else had found it (although I guess it's a super niche bug)... if you're listening to music thorough a Bluetooth speaker (which I do every day whilst I'm drawing), then if your wrist touches to the left of the home button whilst you're drawing, the music cuts out but if you just flip the orientation so it's the other way around the problem doesn't exist at all. I'm guessing that's where the Bluetooth transmitter is.
My Mac is feeling a bit lonely haha. I'm on my MacBook now to type because typing on screens has and will always suck and I don't have the Smart Keyboard as it's super pricey and backlogged.
Oh, another thing to note - if you're just using it as a painting and drawing machine, the lower GB version would be perfectly fine if you're backing up your drawings to your computer or Dropbox or something. I got the bigger version, but the file sizes are pretty small of Procreate files and I've been working at 7000 x 7000. Although I do do almost everything on one layer and have a layer for my reference so I can't really comment how big the files are if you'er maxing out the layers. If you're not going to fill it with games and apps, I think it'd be more than enough.

great information Ace! - I love Procreate - it's what got me back drawing after so many years - I will download the link you supplied - I appreciate the time you took to be so informative!

Don't worry about it - I'm still super stoked on the iPad Pro and still watch reviews from artists on it from time to time whilst I'm cooking dinner or whatever haha.

When my daughter Layla was asleep last night I couldn't help but sketch on it haha. Here's a sketch of UK politician Nigel Farage...

Oh, and don't expect this forum to be a nice experience on the iPad. This forum's software sucks on mobile devices and the iPad is the same.

@Ace-Connell I agree - my iPad goes crazy sometimes on this site if i have it horizontally - so i often end up having to surf with the iPad vertically which fixes the craziness - but is not very good for viewing art - your caricature is awesome!! Have you been to the Schoolism website? - some seriously awesome content there for subscription price - there is a caricature class from Jason Seiler ...pretty cool stuff - ..........so i just watched Will's review of the iPad pro now that he's got the apple pencil and he seemed just as happy with it as you are - ...Apple Pencil is selling for almost $170 on Amazon right now ...price gougers cashing in on Christmas... things should settle down after the holidays though. Thanks again for giving your perspective on this. It was very helpful.

@Ace-Connell Hey Ace, or anyone else using the iPad pro. I finally got my pencil and have been loving it but have you noticed unusually fast battery drain on the iPad ? This only seems to happen when I'm in Procreate using the pencil but as I don't use the iPad for much else I don't have a decent comparison. I've noticed my battery is gone at about 3 hours. Wondering if that seems normal or if I need to take it in to the Apple Store for an exchange. Sketch looks awesome.

@Jonathon-B 3 hours seems a bit extreme. I have mine on full brightness when I'm in Procreate and get maybe 6 or so hours solid drawing whilst streaming music via Apple Music and sending that to my Bluetooth speaker.

@Ace-Connell thanks, I thought that seemed extreme too. I'll take it in and have them look at it.

@Ace-Connell Glad it's not just me. This is my first time on the forum and I'm using my iPad Pro and screaming "WHY IS EVERYTHING SO SMALL!"
BTW I'm really enjoying the forum and everyone's art and advise. I don't know Nigel but I really like your sketch of him. -
@lindsayraecarr Just got the iPad pro yesterday (apple pencil is still two weeks out) - and i have the same issue with everything being very small - i think the site is not optimized for mobile and iPad - my iPad air goes crazy on this site sometimes too unless i hold it vertically - does not happen on any other site though - anyways...welcome to the forum!
-
@Kevin-Longueil Thanks Kevin. Ordered the Pencil in November so I've had it for about a week now. Really like using it. Second best purchase of 2015 behind the iPad Pro for me. I'm sure you'll get lots of use out of it.

@lindsayraecarr I didn't realise people were still struggling getting Pencils! That's crazy to me! I feel really lucky I got one a couple of days after the iPad Pro release date and I was even annoyed about waiting those couple of days haha
