I would love to have a SVS sketch group near me! I can't seem to find a group to go sketching or talk art. That would be awesome! 😄

I have her first book, but I'll have to wait when this comes out not through the kickstarter. 😕 I like how she has such fluid movements in her work which I want to try and achieve in mine.

The size of the dummy would depend on the size of the final book, which either you (if self publishing) or the publisher will have to decide on. If self publishing, there may be some standards based on what the printer you've chosen can handle on their presses. Below is an article that might help.

@tessw I don't know about all that but, I did it. I got the flower done! Yay! What we had to do was choose the pen tool, fill with red, choose a burgundy color for the outline. The first half of the petal was fine but when I got to the part where I had to flip it horizontally, the outline wasn't on the second half. My instructor told me that there's a glitch and to go to the alignment icon thingy and click on it and choose the top square. So, I did and the outline appeared on the other petal. Whew! Glad that's over. Our final assignment is to make a bunch of flowers for a Sascalia -type tree.

It should be fun once I get the hang of making leaves and flowers better and faster! It's keeping me busy 🙂

Here is my WIP for the Transportation contest. Been a fan of steampunk for a while, so that is part of my theme with this. The machine is a transporter, and the city is what will show in the transporter's portal (larger circular area). The small thumbnail is where I am at with the composition. And lastly, the character is the scientist who created the machine.

I just want to say thank you so much for all of these replies! It's really helped me see that its something I can always come back to. There are some great thoughts and I really appreciate that there is a forum where I can get this kind of help.

I was stuck in a place where I felt as if I couldn't progress unless I'd really focuses on realistic face, but after these comments and the information in 'How To Discover Your Style', I think I can finally move on and try something new.

Design, tone, and an underlying understanding of composition really sounds like parts of the puzzle when it comes to putting together an illustration. By studying these and trying out different subjects, this should hopefully bring me back in full circle where I understand realism a lot better, and I can apply my new found skills to create something great.

Oh all the time! I cant tell you how many times I would sketch out the design and hate it before I end up just throwing the entire design away and approaching it with a fresh new sheet of paper. The idea is still there, I just end up approaching it (the pose, composition, etc) almost entirely different from the original concept. Most of the time it works for me!
