I always enjoy looking at model sheets used in cartoons. And I always wanted to draw them for my own characters for fun (someday soon!). I came across this page full of character model sheets from various eras of cartoon history that I thought many of you may find useful either of interest or study.

Quick, stupid question which I assume the answer is “yes, of course, silly!”— are model sheets used in children’s book design? Reason I’m asking is I’ve always heard about model sheets being used in animation and nowhere else. I suppose it’s because many different artists would be drawing the same character whereas a children’s book would be drawn by one person (unless it’s becomes a serial over decades? 🤔). I suppose model sheets would be used in the comic books industry as well.

That’s part of the reasoning I used to convince myself that buying some brushes would be a good investment 😆 I have played around with a few tweaks to modify existing brushes but I still don’t really know what I’m doing.. There are so many different properties involved that I was getting impatient knowing I would have to dedicate time to learning the skill when I really just want to prioritise learning to actually draw/paint digitally first. Baby steps - I have such a lot to learn and I am astonished that some people are skilled enough to create brushes that mimic real-life watercolour effects 🤯

@Nyrryl-Cadiz Interesting. I have an x-pen and it has a roughness that I personally appreciate but I do think the screen is a little duller which I really dislike. I guess the matte protector might present a similar pay off. It's coming this evening so I guess I'll find out soon!

@Aisleen Those are good points, it kinda depends what the purpose of your website is. If it's designed to be a casual walk-through museum of your art, then the multiple categories and dropdown...click pace of navigating it works. If your goal is to sell illustration services, having your best work right on the front page is highly beneficial. The 4 squares is a barrier to click through in that case - "Just show me some art already!" Consider who your target audience is and why they are visiting your site, that will help guide website design decisions.

Thanks everyone for the reply. I do like the idea of letting the client decide the sketch they like and going on from there. This was all good advice thanks again.

I don't think this has been said and I haven't checked out the suggested sites, which may be a better solution, but if you search in Google for Poses, instead of trying to look for a unique pose, you may find what you're looking for. That's helped me in the past. Also, it helps to learn if you find a close pose and modify it a little.

I'm going with the first one but I made a little space between the lips and the streaming thingys. Thanks all!

@thousandwrecks Good point, and thank you! Yes, SVS has been a great place for me to learn new stuff and get a bit nutrients. Till last week I have been working on one project nonstop (except sleep, eating , etc.) for an entire month. Yes, tight schedule and crazy deadlines. This week has been a little bit better, hopefully I can finish these projects in time and have more time for learning/growing. 😁

The examples @Neha-Rawat posted are good. I would consider upper left and lower right prefect examples of vignettes.

I'm going to address this more from a business/ pricing angle.

You want to be careful of "feature creep" in art direction. Vignettes are often priced low because they are "less work than a full page illustration" but art direction can describe a super complicated scene -- albeit with fuzzy edges -- and a client will try to claim "it's a vignette". In my opinion the upper right and lower left images are full page illustrations due to the amount of information included in them. Of course the client can size them as vignettes but I would price them as full page.
