Hello, my name's Francisco Varela. I'm an Arizona based novice artist seeking to learn the craft and to one day make a living through illustration. I have a couple years worth of experience experimenting on my own, but now I'm seeking to learn the fundamentals and develop the skills needed (artistic and self-disciplinary) to succeed. I look forward to meeting and talking to fellow artists, and I especially look forward to seeing everyone's work!

Here are some examples of my own work:
      A WIP of a lion's eye

WIP of a bird of prey

      Thank you for reading!

Welcome. The bird's eye detail was exciting. Sometimes with realistic drawings people leave out that excitement by being too perfect. What tools do you prefer? Digital? Analog, etc?

@duttychai Thank you for the comment! I love drawing and painting eyes. They can make all the difference in an image when done right.

I work with both analog & digital tools. My preference between the two depends on the task.

Analog tools are my preference when it comes to doing studies and exercises. They feel more natural in my hand and the tactile feedback while drawing gives a greater sense of control. The number of physical tools and mediums are also fun to work with.

Digital tools are my preferred option for more detailed and colorful work. The ability to use and manipulate layers, mirror the canvas, and shift the brush color quickly make it a joy to work on realistic images. It has also been fun experimenting with the nearly endless amount of digital brushes available online.
