SEPTEMBER CONTEST: Ink Fairy
-
Exhausted from a day of school, Emily sipped her bubble tea and was about to place her bags down when the elusive Ink Fairy was found doodling on her calendar. In total shock and surprise, as if instinctive, Emily tapped her phone to capture a glimpse of the ink fairy before it disappeared around the corner. The picture fit neatly in her great grandfather's compendium of fairies, An Ordinary Guide to the Extraordinary: Fae, Goblins and Dwarves Understood by Sir Donald Guptill. Emily imagined her great grandad smiling in the portrait hanging above the kitchen doorway. Their work was complete, but now Emily had to clean up the mess left behind. Ugh!
Artist note: highly inspired by both the work of Tony DiterLizzi in Spiderwick Chronicles and the ever creative mind of Brian Froud, I had a fun time imagining how they would design an Ink Fairy. I'm not sure I pushed the design enough but I like the wings being shaped like fountain pen nibs. I'm not very great at inking, I kind of just winged this, so any feedback would be appreciated!

@mamadraw Thank you! I'm trying hard to merge my love for Ghibli and Spiderwick! They're so different but both so beautiful. I know there's a happy medium here somewhere. Thanks again for your kind words!

@Gary-Wilkinson values and due to that readability is much better than in your digital first draft.

It's been awesome seeing everyone's entries! Here's mine. I wanted to approach this illustration as an extension of my Inktober 52 series - just my brush pen and linework (with a little digital cleanup right at the end ;))
