Working on finishing up this piece and trying to add the hair trying to make it the same consistency as the face. This is all fairly new to me any tips or critiques would be great 😊 thank you

@ambiirae I made a youtube video on how I paint hair if that's helpful 🙂

It's looking great so far! I think you just need to add in more contrast

@ambiirae I agree with Carlianne that it looks like a great start. For me the best advice I was given as a general conceptual rule is to think of hair as a single graphic element. I think spatially we get caught up in this overwhelming idea that hair is made up of literally thousands of individual strands. When it comes to drawing it though, approaching it as a single shape that helps dictate the silhouette made a big difference for me. Then it's a process of developing how light and shadow interact with the type of hair it is.

@carlianne thank you! I have seen your video a few times before and I think the last time was before I was ready to really invest in drawing people as well as decide on a style (more realistic or stylized) maybe time for a refresher!

@jdubz I have heard this before and I am trying very hard to remember this and not go over board with individual strands but also not make it too simple it’s a hard balance to create

There is an SVS course on fur and hair if that helps, I've just spotted it while trying to find a different course, it's buried quite far down the list - https://courses.svslearn.com/courses/painting-fur-and-hair

Okay so this is where I am at…

                1. I feel like there is something wrong with the part in her hair going to the right.. I’ve messed with this angle a few times but can’t tell if that side of the hair should be smaller as it’s disappearing behind the head?
                2. As I am adding in the other shoulder also on the right of the drawing it now feels like her head is too big for her body. Is it just me or does it feel off?

Thank you for any advice you can give 😊

Hi @ambiirae The drawing looks great already!

what i am missing the most tho is the structure of the hair/ head. The whole top part of the head seems missing. (hair sits on top of the head - think of it as separate part so you avoid this)

Also the top of the head seems bigger from the top angle due to laws of perspective - so the hair from top angle looks kinda weird, like there is too much of it.
                    Some reference examples -
                    hair.JPG

Now to the actual hair 😃 I made an overpaint attempt. Due to complexity of the hair it helps to break it down into simple apealing shapes. If you squint your eyes you should see that some parts blend into one shape (light parts, dark parts etc).
What i tried to do at first was to group whole shadow part into one shape, whole light part into one shape. Then i added another bigger shape as a fill light from the left. And broke it all up with some smaller shapes from the sides( single locks of hair) so it is more interesting and feels like a hair. I hope this image gets the idea across.

Some refrences of great hair design.

and big shout out to Sinix who can explain it much better then i do.

                    Hope it helps! Good luck

I agree, this was the first thing I noticed on the original image as well: head structure. Looks great now!
