Hi all! What do you think of this piece (and my caption for it)?
I have a tough time keeping a focused concept for the one-word prompts. Do you think the picture and the words work together well enough here to tell a clear story?

@valerie-light Super cute. Reads well. Colors are great. Although I don't know why the green would be reflecting on peoples faces. A glow?

@valerie-light very nice, I am curious if she is imagining/ exaggerating the first day, if she’s not what makes her lucky is there more to the story I’m not seeing? Rendered very well though!

@valerie-light Beautifully rendered piece. Regarding the storytelling, I'm not sure if she's lucky, or just really smart and gifted. I suppose being smart and gifted, in a way, is a form of luck of one's genes. Also, if it's her first day of second grade, it seems oddly early to have all this fanfare. Re: the banner, I would suggest omitting the word "lucky" and make the illustration show that she's truly lucky. I like the caption--it's almost like you created your own story prompt to the one-word prompt. I love Lucy's pose and all the details.

@katrinaf I'm thinking that the green is the glow given off by her lucky clover. Maybe I will change that into an obviously magical shamrock charm she's wearing?
@Asyas_illos I'm thinking of a story where Lucy has always had this crazy good luck that she takes for granted, and later has to learn how to get along without it like everyone else. Maybe I can make an illo that goes along with this one to show how grumpy she is if someone else gets to wear the good luck charm.
@Johanna-Kim You're right, she's just really fortunate and kind of worshipped here, more than specifically lucky. I'll have to think about that a bit more.

Thanks for the feedback! It is most appreciated.

@valerie-light that’s one lucky little girl. Nice story with the focus pulled to Lucy by the fuller color range. I see what @Asyas_illos is saying. If you didn’t see the banner, would you know she was lucky without some supporting text. That’s the kind of situation I find myself facing a lot.

I've been poking at this a bit more over the past couple of days, trying to emphasize that this action is stemming from a lucky charm. I'm not sure if that story is coming across, and I think I'm ready to put this one down for now. Anything standing out as an obviously weird tangent or anything?

@valerie-light that reads a lot clearer now before I thought it was a part of the shirt. The only tangent-y thing I notice is the pole of the sign kinda goes right down the side of the paper that girl is waving about, to me it’s still obvious that it’s in the background, so not sure if that’s a big deal, looks great!

This little redhead character cracks me up, so I'm sketching some ideas to continue the story of her lucky charm. I'd like to show how she feels when someone else gets it for a while, and also maybe the moment of her getting it for the first time. Any suggestions?

I'm having a tough time nailing down a clear story in one illustration here. So i figured I'd take this opportunity to add some much-needed sequential artwork to my portfolio. What do you think about the story that's being told across these two images? (the one on the left is 90% done, the one on the right is still a rough sketch)

@valerie-light it definitely helps with the story. It’s funny I’m doing the same thing! My story with the fish want coming across so I decided to do sequential illustrations too. Will you enter them both? I’m not sure if I will but then again it doesn’t hurt so why not?

@asyas_illos that is so funny! I'm not sure yet, it depends how the second one comes out. I don't think i'd put these two compositions side by side in a spread, and I'm not prepared to restart a 2-page spread. I think.

I think I'm done with this, and just leaving this here overnight to see if I still like it in the morning. Definitely not my favorite prompt, but I'd rather have it done than perfect.

I'm planning to submit it formatted just like this, as 2 sequential story pages. What do you think?

@Valerie-Light two images on one page? Smart why didn’t I think of that? I submitted mine separately…
