@StudioLooong Yes, definitely get a sense that she feels lucky. Great expression and pose. She's been looking for a particular card (probably part of a collection) and she's finally found it. And I love her room and all the details. Great to see some examples of chance and luck and fortune telling, as well.

@StudioLooong Cute! I love how you backlit her and faded out the detail in the room behind her. Great choice.

@StudioLooong this looks so good! One thing I think could be adjusted though is her tooth in the way back of her mouth that’s just catching a bit of light. I think you could remove it altogether or simply make it a light gray rather than the intense dark shadows around it. I think the tooth on the right side with the shadow on it is a bit too intense as well and could be fixed with just lightening it a bit. Other than that it’s all top notch!

A little bummed that mine didn't make it into the mix today, I'd appreciate any feedback on how I could have strengthened the concept. I thought it was pretty clear but maybe its missing the mark somehow?

@StudioLooong I think if I were to critique yours after listening to them go over all of the images, I would say yours may fall into the lottery ticket issue they brought up. Where the thing that is lucky is a small item the person is holding. I think also to anyone who doesn't know Pokemon cards they won't understand this as luck, it may read more as just excitement.

Either way, me and my fiancé went through a lot of the images posted in the thread talking about each one and what we liked and we both liked yours, she was a big Pokemon fan so she knew what was up. I don't think yours would be dinged for execution though, it's very well drawn, colored and lit. The excitement is there on her face, the room is great and doesn't distract, and you even got one of those little paper foldy things with the colors on it which is awesome.

@StudioLooong The guys used the word 'chance' a lot - Luck brought by chance. So perhaps this reads that she bought a lot of cards to find this exact one and it wasn't just a lucky happen-stance. Maybe if she had found the card on the street or in a park and was lucky for it to be the 'one' she always wanted. Instead it looks like she had a stack of cards and 'finally' found the one she'd been wanting.

The illustration is strong IMO. 🙂 Even if the prompt Lucky doesn't fit it according to the guys.

I didn't get my piece reviewed either - but I knew having a 'lucky market' where luck could be bought was stretching it. Now I know how literal they were thinking. LOL.

I think it’s great I think the prompt was misleading if they were going to critique so literally.

@StudioLooong honestly I would have put yours in the top 4 for sure. The only thing that might have made the difference based off of what they said today is that if you had shown bad luck as well as good luck in the illustration then it could have taken it that extra notch up. I feel like the prompt should have said that it should include both good and bad luck because it wasn’t specified yet this was one of the prevailing themes they discussed in the successful pieces today.

@Griffin I’m not sure I agree a lot times they said choose one, is it good luck or bad but agreed that this one was great!

@StudioLooong I loved yours and thought it would go far. I'm not into Pokemon nor are my kids but I've heard all of the crazy stories about Pokemon during the pandemic and knew exactly what this was getting at. It is a great picture for representing lucky! Excellent work!

I was also surprised this one didn’t make it, but have been wondering if maybe it didn’t fully translate if the judges weren’t the generation to have really lived Pokémon, or thought it was too pop-cultural-specific? Fun side story: my brother got a holographic Charizard in the very first booster pack he ever opened in 1999, then foolishly left it by the leaky fish tank and ruined it that very night. 😱

@patricialamas Yeah, I thought that opening a pack of trading cards (regardless of whether in your generation it was Pokemon, Magic, or Baseball cards) was relatable enough to pull up that "lucky" moment of finally getting the card you wanted. Maybe the judges just didn't connect with it. I've been hearing from a lot of people like you through social media who have personal stories from childhood linked to some sort of "lucky" moment with trading cards.

@StudioLooong I just watched the replay and I was stunned not to see yours as a finalist.

Perhaps the judges simply didn't connect with how lucky it feels to pull a rare card?

I do think you have an opportunity to do a bit more storytelling though. All the posters/her shirt seem to portray random hobbies & interests where you could make her a pokemon super-fan. You could deck her room out in poke-gear (or maybe charmeleon/mander/zard specifically) and add some sparkle to the prized card. Then we can really see how important and special this card is to her. Maybe she has a binder filled with cards that is missing this one? I think she would seem more lucky if the stakes were upped a bit.
