Here come some of those small starter jobs I've been looking for! Does anyone have some advice on a first-time licensing contract? Details below.

The editor of a nearby local newspaper is interested in hiring me for some editorial projects in the future. Yay! This is the editor's first time hiring an illustrator, and we're both doing our research as we go.

As a trial run first project, she's commissioning me to illustrate a map of top 10 cute places to visit in the area. I love this idea! (in no small part because I plan to take myself on 10 cute sketching trips to prepare!)

As far as image usage, she hopes to print/post my illustration with an article about places to visit, but ultimately she plans to sell local area merchandise through her newspaper's website. She's thinking of things like postcards, puzzles, prints, tshirts, and tote bags with my local area map printed on them. It's a small town (5000 people) so I don't think she's planning to sell more than a couple hundred print-on-demand objects.

I plan to design an 11x17 300 dpi image (big enough to work on a tshirt or tote bag) and maybe also a smaller postcard size simpler version. I'll include 10 landmarks, hand lettering, little sketches, etc.

I consulted my copy of the GAG handbook, (so handy!) https://graphicartistsguild.org/the-graphic-artists-guild-handbook-pricing-ethical-guidelines/
I found the sections on illustrated map design and licensing, and now it's time for me to pitch a price. I imagine I'll put maybe 20 hours into this project, plus sketching trips that will generate lots of other useful material.

I think this map falls in the Small Editorial price bracket, so somewhere in the wide area between $250 and $1500. How the heck do I narrow that down?
