I get to write and illustrate a middlegrade novel!

It's gonna come out 2024 from Annick Press.
I sent them tearsheets because, you know, I wanted to draw stuff for them. They got back to me saying they didn't have any work for artists right now, but if I had any stories to send them their way.
I had a story idea that I liked but was a bit too close to some old horror movies I loved, but hammered out a synopsis and two sample chapters with illustrations.
That led to a meeting with an editor to discuss deeper themes and inspiration (I pitched it as a love letter to cheesy horror movies), which led to an expanded synopsis (where I moved it away from the inspiration), which led to a series pitch (Ravensbarrow might get to be a series!) and then a contract!
Apparently it wasn't the illustrations in the sample chapters but the quality of the writing which got their attention. Gotta say that I was surprised!

it's definitely not something I practice all the time, but I took a lot of writing courses at college (and I write a lot of dialogue for comics, I suppose)
