@Geoffrey-Mégardon I know, you are already very far in the progress - I'm sorry I didn't find the time to read through your thread earlier!

I am missing a visual connection between the tentacles and the space ranger. Having them so dark and blueish they more look like a foreground element to me than something that is a danger to him.
How do you think about letting ONE of the tentacles creep on the ground to his feet and touch one of his shoes? This would connect the fore- and the middleground.

I finally have some time to update this thread with the final version of John Space vs Tentacles.

        5D3F586D-5961-4A1E-BA66-7465FC0BA9D1.jpeg

@MimiHecher unfortunately, as I finished this piece last week, I did not intent to come back on it except for small corrections (i.e. changing a shadow) 😕 but you can see one tentacle creeping on the ground in between his legs a little bit. Maybe if I add a bit more contact shadow it will be clearer that the tentacle is on the ground 😕

Mmmh actually I probably need to retouch the shadow of John Space’s leg, as it has a tangent with the creeping tentacle. Ah well, gonna have to retouch this piece 😃 !

Maybe you just leave this really cool colored piece as it is for now and go on to the next piece. You can change things later on, f.e. in a month or when the whole portfolio is done. 😉

@Geoffrey-Mégardon Hey, so cool!! I really dig the design of the characters and environment, and the color is great. Two final thoughts:

The added texture in the sky might be a BIT much. It feels slightly distracting and out of place, so I think your version from two weeks ago is actually a little more solid. It also helps the character stand out more to have the lighter, simpler background. Does anyone else besides me think this?

The little bit of shadow on his hair kind of makes it look like a tube. Is this intentional? Not a huge deal.

            Honestly, great work.

@Sarah-VanDam thank you for your feedback!

Yeah, I wasn’t sure at first for the red cloud but then, I could feel that the low and heavy sky was adding to the feeling of being trapped. Like a lid above our heads. Might not be the best execution though… so I might try different ways to do it, or get rid of it.

Yes, it is a tube! A bit like Elvis Presley:

In terms of updates, I am working on my new piece (see thumbnails below), then I will start making a website.

I would like to know which thumbnails/composition you prefer between the following ones:

PS: Note that I have done a few more pieces between John Space and this new one, I will post them later.

@Geoffrey-Mégardon Wow first, let me just say bravo for doing things in this way. You're really great at taking the time to work out a concept first before jumping in to detailing/painting (something I can't quite seem to master haha I always get too excited).
I'm so impressed by these thumbnails, you are so clearly thinking through the angles and perspective and where to put the camera, it's just wonderful.
To me, 9-12 seem like the most dynamic drawings with the most intrigue and movement. And of those, I thing 11 and 12 really give the impression that this car is being chased by the dino and is trying to escape. You've absolutely nailed that with tilting it and making that action line of the car sweep around like that.

@ArtistErin thank you! I am so worried not to find any gigs with my current style that seems to comic oriented for children’s book (i.e. lineart heavy) and too child-ish for comics/graphic novels.

@Geoffrey-Mégardon I suppose I am not a seasoned market expert but I do know good art when I see it. As a kid I LOVED the Sunday comics, loved looking at the linework and action sequences. Your work reminds me of a Dreamcast (this console came and went BTW) video game Toy Commander. My boys LOVED it. Maybe the goal is to get it in front of the right people. It's the in between phase of getting ready that can be daunting, because of doubt and all the unknowns... I love how good you are at the thumbnailing. Such an important step to which I struggle with constantly.

Progress of the day, the tight sketch (as tight as I could!). I think I solved most of the scene and details, so I should be ready to ink it now.

                            447EA7BE-6CE6-46A6-B07C-82D00E576599.jpeg

Do you see any obvious problem? I am especially not sur about the t-Rex. I feel there might be something wrong with his body or that its gesture/action line could be improved.

In terms of story telling, the idea is that they are filling cavities in the teeth of the t-Rex using balls that break into foam. The girl is aiming at the teeth. In a comic, I would be able to explain their method before hand. Here I feel I just need to give cues and let the viewer answer the question what the heck are they doing?

Which brings us to the question: What did you think they where doing?

@Geoffrey-Mégardon I'd have said the vet is putting him to sleep (not permanently!) - perhaps because the T Rex is chasing/hunting the vet/wreaking havoc? Might need some sort of detail which makes it clearer that it's about dental hygiene! 🙂 Love your work - it's so dynamic and entertaining. Your take on things is fascinating. I would have loved it as a kid. Love it as an adult.

@Geoffrey-Mégardon I prefer no. 12, as the dinosaur is so big it breaks the edges of the paper - that adds to its mass, and both it and the vehicle have dynamic poses. 😃 Pretty cool!

                                    @Geoffrey-Mégardon Ah, you already decided!
Funny enough, this way you just tell another story than I expected, as to me the vehicle seems to be "more important" and the greater focal point, as it is so much more dynamic. I think that's very nice decided, as you emphasize that the car is more flexible and the dinosaur seems to be more portly. 😃

New update. I inked the dino and the van, and I added the shadow layer.

                                            van-vs-dino3.jpg

I will probably revise the shadow of the T-rex as it does not exactly match the one of the van. Other than that, I intend to be done with the coloring tomorrow.
