June 2024 Submissions - How To Fix Your Art

Here's my submission for June's HTFYA:

@Jason-Crowley nailed it mate.

@Jason-Crowley Do you have any tips to share for learning hand-lettering typography?
-
@kayleenartlover I haven't really done hand lettering here except for the 'Godzilla' text but a good place to start would be asking the question: is hand lettering needed to solve the problem? Can an existing font get across the feeling you want?
If you have Creative Cloud then you have access to loads of fonts. I used fonts for 'Robzilla' and 'Words & pictures by.' I traced over 'Robzilla' to give it a more hand-crafted feel. So a simple approach would be: trace over fonts by hand to give them a bit of a wobbly feel.
Another approach would be take a font that's close to what you want, then adjust it, or copy it by hand and tweak it. This will give you quicker results than starting from scratch.
If I was to do more bespoke hand lettering I'd study and analyze artists that tend to do a lot of that in their work, Melissa Castrillon is a great example of this.
Hope that helps. Hopefully SVS do a course on that soon!

@Jason-Crowley Thanks! And yes, I've been eagerly waiting for the class since Lee brought it up on a livestream months ago

@Zachary-Schrage Amazing! Catnip for Jake

@Zachary-Schrage oooooooh I love this type of ink art style, like old illustrations like Wizard of Oz
-
@Zachary-Schrage this reminds me of Chris Van Allsberg. Love it.
-
I am sending my picture. This was quite different from stuff I usually would do but it was fun.
-
@Zachary-Schrage Wow! Absolutely sensational!
-
@evka8D So cute, I love your little Godzilla's expression!
-
@Zachary-Schrage This is some awesome hatching you got there! Very Bernie Wrightson esque

I originally had a sketch that was āChicken Soup for the Kaiju Soul,ā full of uplifting stories of Godzilla having killed all his enemies, but I reread the prompt that said this was a childrenās book (which is why Iām here in the first place, haha).
Iām not sure how to render very well. I am really impressed with everyone on this forum. I feel like Iām staring at what I made for days and not really being that satisfied but not knowing how to fix it. Iām looking forward to the critique if this makes it!

@Jason-Crowley haha thankyou!

@kayleenartlover Thanks! I do love old pen and ink illustration and etchings.
