@Marsha-Kay-Ottum-Owen This is a cute idea. I like neighborhood tree. I don't know if you want it too, but your tree facce does look really nervous. Also, some of your houses, particularly the lowest one, have a different perspective. This illustration has a happy vibe and as you tighten the drawing up some tree leaves, unless its a cooler time, would encourage that vibe. I hope this helps. I think your off to a great start.

a very cute start to an illustration. I agree, that the face looks a bit worried and also cut off. I don't think the illustration needs the tree face, there is enough interest in the several houses and their inhabitants already. the middle bottom house for me seems a bit off in perspective. I am not familiar with your style, so its hard to say how it will look finished. but maybe the houses could be a bit flattened out so the perspective is less worrisome?

if you are going with the face then I would consider making the nose on larger root that goes into the ground. right now it sort of looks flat on the front because of those smaller shapes. I think of the tree as an old grandfather character, perhaps he doesn't need to be nervous but rather happy, for having friends aroud

I have a tough time with perspective still. I need to redo the class. I was trying to practice with this one. Maybe I'll have to go look at my books and review or look at some of the classes befoer I continue.Marsha Ottum Owen

@Sara-Glennon I think that I did three different horizontal lines and used them to cereate the houses. I probably should have had them all on the same line? I need to go check it out.

Is the perspective correct? I don't think it is. Does it matter for this particular piece? I would argue that it doesn't necessarily matter and you could probably push the incorrectness even more. I think that for a bunch of animals building houses in the organic branches of trees, you might expect them to not be level and not have them all receding to the same horizon line. You could exaggerate this even more with some topsy turvy towers and more extreme angles and three point perspective as you get into the higher branches..
It all kind of depends on what you are going for really. If you want the perspective to be correct, do a smallish thumbnail and place the horizon line. It looks like the horizon line on this piece might be a little lower than the center squirrel. Have all the horizontal receding lines vanish to this horizon line.

The perspective is a bit wonky. I am no expert on perspective , and it can be hard. But if you plan from the start it does get much easier.
Perspective can be fudged on some artwork but when dealing with buildings/angles/etc it should still probably be close. If not, your mind will know something is off but won't be sure of what.

I struggle with perspective, too...so take this with a grain of salt
First, super cute idea! I love the community, and I like the style of your tree. I think there's only a few tweaks that you might consider. Try thinking about where the horizon line is in the picture, because houses above the horizon line will show their bottoms, while houses below the horizon line will show their rooftops. That might help with perspective.The house in the center with the squirrel, looks like you wanted the house split into two directions, but there's just one roof line. You might want the roof line to change directions like the top of the door. Although, I wonder why the door is split? Maybe I'm not seeing it correctly
Add some leaves and you've got an adorable little neighborhood!

I was trying to show the corner of the house and put the door folded around it. Anyway, I have been watching the perspective video and reviewing my Perspective Made Easy book so, I do have a few ideas on how I might be able to fix it now. One thing is that I had three horizon lines! Ha! So, I'll work on that I plan to do it in watercolor so will mask out the leaves and add thenm later Thanks for your suggestions! We'll see if I get it done. If not, I will have still learned something about perspective (which I have learned in the past but forgotten! ) -
Great concept - reminds me of Dr. Suess's moose story, Thidwick, the Big-hearted Moose - Especially the expression on the tree - Love it!
