      'Slow' to me always means leisurely falling snow up on the skihill in the dead of night. I also don't think I have any moody atmospheric pieces in my portfolio yet.

      Gonna try and work on this as slow as I can, so I stopped at thumbs and a comp sketch.

      As always, crits and suggestions are always welcome πŸ™‚

        From a glance, I thought the halo around the lamp was the moon. That might be another lighting option to play around with. πŸ™‚ I love the feeling of this so far.

            Great atmosphere. I can not read very clearly what the person is doing in the thumbnail though. Looking forward to it coming further.

              @kathrynadebayo

              I did too, actually :smiling_face_with_open_mouth_closed_eyes: as soon as I was done I thought 'wait, I didn't mean for the moon to be there...'

              You're right, it's definitely something I'll have to play around with πŸ™‚

                @xin-li At the moment it's tough to read, yeah. But you DID realize it was a person πŸ˜„ so I'll consider that a win πŸ™‚

                once I start the sketch it'll become more apparent that it's a kid with a dog on a leash slogging through the snow.

                  I think you are going along the right path. I really like the placement of everything in this image. I think the values could give you a little bit of trouble, which I can see you working to solve in the bigger thumbnail. The whole light on dark, dark on light tip is what I am thinking of- your characters will be very dark indeed to stand out on a midvalue background. I understand that it is night, however so that can't be helped unless you can add a rim light around them, to help them stand out? As it is, the light is your focal point. Is that your intention? Or is it the figures you want to be noticed first? Either way is of course fine, if that is your intent, but I always ask myself that question. I did NOT read the halo around the light as a moon, because I am assuming that the edge will be softened in your final piece, correct?

                  All in all, I think your progress on this piece is really fantastic! I think you just have to think of lighter lights and darker darks to pull it together. I can't wait to see the next step!

                    @jeanebean Thank you for the awesome feedback :smiling_face_with_open_mouth:

                    Getting the lighting right's absolutely gonna be tough on this once, but I think (hope) I'll be able to pull it off. Part of the 'slowvember' process on this one's going to be doing lots and lots and lots (did I say lots?) of value studies in an attempt to really nail it down.

                        It looks like it's going to be a beautiful piece.
