Hi all, here is the initial sketch for this Month. I took some time to check out a lot of picture books at the library to dissect and absorb artwork.
The layout here was inspired by Laure Fornier, the illustrator for the picture book Wake Up City! written by Erica Silverman. I wanted to search out a pro that I thought was similar to my style and thought Laure was it. Any thoughts, comments are always welcomed! Will move on to Procreate app from here. -Todd

@artbytra The concept and details are fun. I like all of the people. It provides a great opportunity for expression and emotion.

Based on the prompt you might want to have a few more people astonished at the bug car.

I would love to see how you plan to work out the values.

        Good luck.

          Nice work so far 😃

Part of me wants to see some more clues to help me decode that the building is, in fact, a school right away. Took me a few moments to find the desks in the classroom and such.

However, other than a sign that says 'insert name here elementary' I'm not sure how you could fit in more clues 🙂

I agree with @theprairiefox that some more 'astonishment' might be a good idea.

I really like it so far! Nice composition.

@Braden-Hallett Signs can sometimes look forced if placed awkwardly, but since it's a city you could put "P. S. 118" or some other number that isn't a "Hey Arnold" call out. I think you could get away with it and not really have to change much to see a school.

@jakecrowe Absolutely! Every time I've used a sign in an illustration it's been rather frowned upon, too 🙂

I wish I could come up with some universal symbol or common 'thing' that could be placed that could be read at a glance yet unintrusive 🙂

              It's tough!

I love it! It's full of nice little touches and different moments to look at without losing your focal point. The only thing that doesn't quite work for me is your street sign. The perspective you've given it makes it look like it's laying down flat on the road- when I think it's supposed to be attached to a pole?

Looking forward to seeing it progress.

@theprairiefox @Braden-Hallett @jakecrowe @TessaW Thanks all for the nice reply's. I may put the street sign on the cross walk pole? Or like what @jakecrowe said use a generic name for the school and under it, put the address? I will play with it.
But yeah, I think if I did the street sign like it is here, I'd have to pull way back on the perspective, which will lose a lot of the fun faces etc of the people and I don't want to do that. Onward! thanks -Todd
