      Hi Everyone,

I'M FULL OF CAFFEINE! I've decided to start early this month and post as much as possible. Here are three early thumbnails just to get the ball rolling. I'm going to keep thumbnailing until I have at least 10 separate ideas before moving on to character design, composition and the rest. Critiques, input, etc welcome! Thanks!

@Chris-Philpot you should try to make variation from nbr 2. The idea is new and the concept seducing. Not sure if it should be an old man (but why not? Maybe fairies age like humans!). Maybe the swip could be on a more elaborated environmemt? Maybe other fairies (not necessarely ink fairies) could be around too and busy with their own tasks? Anyway... I feel there is more to explore there!

@Julia Thank you! Yeah, the ink fairly as a janitor is my favorite so far. I like your idea about other fairies for context. Maybe he's underappreciated fairy society.

Maybe she's blowing an ink bubble to thwart the photo...

@Chris-Philpot haha we had the same idea. I just posted mine on the contest page. Those vindictive little fairies.

I thought of a squid too. We must have the same sick sense of humor.

@chrisaakins Ha! Yeah, someone is going to do great things with the squid ink. That direction is hard to pass up. Tentacles are too fun to draw!

I, too, like the janitor idea. I think it is a really fun concept and really original!

I love the newsboy cap on the thumbnail lower down as well. Maybe the janitor was a "newsboy fairy" in the 20's and has kept the hat all these years, haha.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Janitor seems to have potential so I dashed off a couple of early revisions.

Why is he cleaning up ink? Maybe he's like the tooth fairy and collects it?

Why does Ellie think today is the day to get a photo? Maybe she dumped it out to attract him?

Julia's idea of other fairies made me think of naughty/punk fairies from his fairy world. Maybe they vandalize Ellie's art table for him and the janitor has to clean up after them?

Or maybe Ellie's cat is always making a mess and attracting the ink fairy?

Trying to settle on a coherent idea that will read correctly in a single image. Probably be in this revision stage for a few days. These still feel like a bit of a stretch concept-wise.

@JoshuaDages Thanks! I'm adding a janitor hat at least. Will play around with the details of his costume.

@Chris-Philpot thanks so much. I’m just getting started with illustration. I’m coming from an oil painting background so it’s really tough to shift gears. I think illustration is much harder than fine arts. Designing characters is so hard.

I love the janitor with no hat.

@kimmypie Yeah, I know what you mean. My comfort zone is editorial illustration so it's humbling learning all the basics again in this world. At least we know it gets easier.

@Chris-Philpot I like both of these but I think the cat concept has more of an obvious tie in with the prompt. Love the poor little janitor 😆

New study with some line work and values. Testing having Ellie in the background.
