My name is Katrin and I am a self taught children's book illustrator from Australia (originally from Germany but I moved here around 16 years ago).

I just finished two picture book projects this year and then I usually reflect on my work and try to learn new things and improve - which is why I signed up for this SVS free trial. I can already tell I love it and the choices of courses are amazing.

To challenge myself additionally and also because I just LOVE folktales I again took part in Folktaleweek on Instagram and created seven illustrations according to their prompts.
I was wondering if you guys would like to give me some feedback on one of the pieces and maybe help me choosing courses here at SVS to improve that way. I think one of the areas I can definitely need help with is "depth".

So here is my illustration for the prompt "harvest" - I chose a Brother Grimm folktale about a witty farmer tricking the devil. I've aimed for a handmade look and limited palette.

If you had some comments or suggestions I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!

      Cheers,

      Katrin

        Welcome Katrin!

Where about in Australia are you? I used to live in Sydney but relocated to Paris in June. I also lived in Munich for a year when I was younger, I just loved it!

I love your devil! The illustration is very sweet. I think you suceeded very well with the limited palette. Maybe I would force the contrast a tiny bit on the vegetables to bring some volume. Unless you d rather keep it flat? It is mostly a stylistic choice.

I didn't know about the folktale contest, I'll have a look at it, thank you!

@Julia Thank you so much for your message Julia! I am in Brisbane -very humid at the moment heading into summer. Never been to Munich, though, can you imagine that? 🙂 I would love to live in Paris for a while...it's my absolute favourite European city!

I will definitely try to add some volume to the beets, thank you! I am trying to get away from my illustrations' flatness but most of the times I don't even see the problems...

Let me know what you think about Folktaleweek if you get a chance to check it out 🙂

            Cheers,
            Katrin
