Hi! I wanted so feedback or tips on this piece.

The colours might be a bit out there 😁 Obviously I'm still in an inbetween stage but that's also the best stage to change things!

It's meant to be about the plans of a young girl somewhere from 10-13 (any fb on the age?) who really wants to be an astronaut. She likes to build her own miniature planetariums and she even made her mom buy an astronaut helmet on ebay!

I should probably change the bottle in the front to some kind of water bottle instead of smt that looks like a poison bottle! 🤨

Any feedback on story content is also much appreciated! I'm still learning how to "marry" my illustrations and their "purposes" or "back story"

I like the idea! Looking at the picture from a smaller screen I would advise to play around with contrast/value more. The separate elements tend to fuse together in their current state. Really dig the colour palette though!

Hi, This is lovely. I also struggle with purpose and backstories too. Do you have a backstory in mind? Could it be something like she has been inspired by someone/thing to be an astronaut? Perhaps a hero to her such as the first female astronaut or a pioneering astronaut (sorry my space knowledge isn’t that good) and she could have a framed picture of them or a couple of small pictures of various astronauts and a model of the shuttle around the helmet). Or perhaps she just loves astronomy and has starcharts because she has always wanted to be up in space to be right amongst them. Apologies I’m not too good at the wording of feedback so I hope this sounds ok.

@Niels Thank you for your reply, you're absolutely right! I've been thinking this too actually. There is a "sameness" to the colour pallet, both in hue and darkness wise. I might make the shadows darker or overlay with a dark colour to make the darks darker. Gonna figure that out 🙂

This is actually really interesting thanks! I like your framed picture idea. I think it would be nice to have a frame of a female astronaut and maybe the little girl wrote the astronaut a fan letter and the astronaut responded? I imagine she'd frame the letter too!

@emergingeden This is a really cute idea! The colors are nice together. The one thing is that I second the idea of putting in more value/contrast into the items on the desk to separate them from the background 🙂

other than the helmet, nothing says space exploration. Maybe ad pictures on the wall of rockets, famous astronauts, spacecraft like satellites. Go to NASA website for ideas.

Love your cropping. LOVE the palette — I’ve seen a lot of books in your target age range lately with similar colors so you seem to be right on trend. Great comments all around, even your self-edit about the water bottle — good catch!

To expand on the backstory comment — what about adding elements that clue us into her personality? Is she all space, all the time, or does she have other interests? What kind of a STEM girl is she — girly, sporty, organized, driven, whimsical, serious, playful... What about adding things that make her space seem even more “lived in”, like pencils/pens, wrappers, other personal paraphernalia that makes it onto our desks...

Love your concept. Great start! Looking forward to seeing where you go with this.

@emergingeden Hi so I like the back story but I don't read it so well, I was actauly surprised not seeing the 10-13 year old girl in the image. Are you making this piece solely as still life or will it also being accompanied by another illustration with the young girl in it? The first thought I have to include the girl would be to make her miniature to push the idea it's her big dream and she's working on her designs (maybe even carries some material or a part of the mini planetarium in her hand as she longingly looks into the helmet and dreams of space). I don't know if you want to push it in that sort of direction.

I do think the colours are unexpectedly delightful and the second image (close up) is more intimate.

Hey guys, I know it's been a while, but I guess I needed the time to figure out how to make this WORK (and I needed to let the earlier "idea" die because it wasn't working)

but here I am! Still not finished (have a busy internship atm) but here is my progress:
(i decided to include my moodboard so it stands out a bit clearer)

As you can tell, my "character" loves Tintin/Kuifje. Btw, if you don't know Tintin. Tintin is a comics series from my country (Belgium) that's quite famous actually, I grew up with it. 😃 (see also moodboard)
