NOVEMBER CONTEST: Star
-
Hey all! Sorry for the belated post! We are moving and it's crazy over here But we are no less excited to see what you do with this month's prompt!
As the year winds down, there's so much reason for hope!
So the prompt for November is: Star
A star can be so many things - a starfish, the finishing touch on a Christmas tree, a gold star from your teacher. Think about the role they can play in your own storytelling.
Because this is the final prompt this year, we are gonna do TWO Critique Arenas: Classic and All Star.
Critique Arena Classic: This is just like our usual Critique Arena, except NONE of the 2021 winners will be in the competition. They will be competing in the All Star competition. So, strategy-wise, if you’ve been a contender in the past, this would be a good time to submit since the top contenders will be out of the picture! Entries are due Nov 30, and should be submitted via the Critique Arena website. The Classic Critique Arena will be Tue, Dec 7.
Critique Arena All Star: We’ll also be inviting all the previous winners from 2021 to battle it out in a special All Star competition! The prompt is the same. For the All Star competition, there is cash money on the line! The top 3 win cash - $100 for 3rd, $200 for 2nd and $300 for 1st. Entries are due Dec 7. All previous 2021 winners will receive an email with instructions on how to submit. The All Star Critique Arena will be Tue, Dec 14.
Please note that they are scheduled for Tuesdays rather than the usual Thursdays!
As always, be sure to submit via the Critique Arena website, but we'd love it if you post here too so we can all see and comment!
Good luck all!

The medic leaps around the countryside looking for fallen stars who need help getting back home.
I really enjoyed working on this, I chose to do a character sheet for this one, with the aim of improving on some of the things that I didn't do so well on my last character illustration. I would like to have done a full illustration but unfortunately I don't have as much free time this month. I can immediately see some things that I would change, but overall I'm happy with how it turned out.
Good luck everyone !

“Star” prompt inspired me to make a book cover with my Inktober characters, Penelope and Bunny.
-
@kathrynadebayo I LOVE how you designed the boat with images and details, instead of just the typical planks!
-
@frogpunzel I think designing the boat was the reason why I was excited to draw this, haha. I really like the concept in your shooting star piece!
-
Wow, very cool illustrations everyone! Here are mine, I could not choose so I worked out two ideas.
-
Here is my entry for STAR!
I am really busy this month... so I had to combine the contest prompt with trying to get any Christmas illustrations done this year. -
@joosterwijk I love the one with dinosaurs upside down, very unique concept.

@xin-li Thank you!

This is my 2nd submission. I had fun applying the custom brush tutorial and various other svs tutorials for this image. It started with scanned pencil then digitally painted. Originally I had the family lying on flat ground with a swingset where the houses are. I changed it to a slope and added the houses in the background to improve the dynamism and depth of the composition. I was inspired by all the stargazing my family did during COVID shutdown. We observed the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction, comet NEOWISE and shooting stars.
