Starlight Superstars
-
Hey everyone, it’s my first time posting artwork or entering a contest! My idea is a kid enjoying a camp singalong with their dog on a starry night.
I’d love some feedback on my thumbnails- I’m not sure if the campfire is distracting and crowding, or if it’s necessary for the story. Or should I keep working on new compositions?
(They’re very rough stick figures, I’d just like to work out the main ideas now)
I do have favorites, but I’d really like outside perspectives!
Thanks! -
@loud my eye keeps going to #4. Good luck with the drawing!

Yayy for firsts~! I love the campfire because it'll create interesting lighting, but I guess you could also imply the campfire without having to actually show it, too. I also love that you've explored several thumbnails. I feel, however, that they don't really convey the "star" theme strongly enough. One way to remedy this would be to maybe have the sky take up more space in the composition such as below.
I also feel like it could use a little more story. Why do we care about these two characters? What's pulling the viewer into this image? Maybe they're singing to a specific star in the sky? Maybe the stars are singing along? Maybe the stars are crowding around the kid so they can hear his music better? It just needs that little extra story element to take this idea from good to great.
I hope this was somewhat helpful. Thank you so much for sharing your art with us and good luck on the contest!!

Thanks for everyone’s feedback!
@aprilshin thanks for pushing me to do more! My original brainstorming for the theme was that they’re aspiring rockstars, but when I made the setting a starry night campsite, I guess that part got lost in the sketches. I’ll see if there’s a way I can bring that back to develop the characters more. I’ll also try to play around more with bringing the sky in as part of the story rather than just a background.
It could be interesting to try to show firelight without showing the fire, but would be trickier.I need to work on the narrative but I know the mood I’m going for: celebrating with your best friend, getting lost in something you’re passionate about, stargazing by a warm bright fire on a cool dark night
It just occurred to me while I’m writing this that seeing any stars is a special occasion for me, because I live in a city with light pollution lol. I guess that nostalgic feeling was really what I was making. Now I have to figure out how to communicate something clearer...
Thanks again!
