Christmas card/book promotion illustration WIP, critique requested
-
Hi, Everyone.
it is this time of the year.... Christmas is around the corner. I am trying to paint a Christmas card based on the characters from a book that I illustrated. The Star Makers Apprentice came out this autumn. The image below is the end paper in the back of the book.
I thought it would be fun to do a Christmas card as a continuity of the story from the book. Here is a WIP. Would love to hear your thoughts on this piece. Are there any tangents? Does the posture of the characters look natural? Does the comp feels right?

Looks great @xin-li!

Hi Xin,
What a great idea for a book promotion/xmas artwork! I love the color palette of this piece. I have 2 suggestions:
-
The whole piece is looking a little busy with the stringed stars, the blurry stars in the sky and the city lights (also the pattern on their clothes). There's no place for the eyes to rest. I'd probably highlight on 1 of these 3 groups and keep the other 2 a little sparse.

I think the poses of the characters work well. Did you try the composition with the moon a little off centre?

@neha-rawat thank you very much for the feedback.
The blurred stars were suppose to be snow. Hmmm... I consider remove it. I think I will dim the city light to let focus be on the sky. The sting might be too thick/dark, making the piece a bit too busy.I will try to move the moon off centre. I felt there is something not quite right with the position of the moon and the characters.
Thanks for your thoughts, really helpful

Hi @xin-li, I thought they were blurred stars too and agree with the good feedback from @Neha-Rawat.

Here is the final art. thanks for the feedback. I liked the moon off centre a lot better. Thanks @Neha-Rawat
I fiddle a bit with the snow. I hope it looks more convincing as snow. I will let it sit over the weekend. Maybe sending out the card sometime next week. let me know if you have any more comments.
