@Stephanie-H what if you did something like this, moving the mountain higher and eliminating some the fog on the right side? That would give you a more open negative space if that’s what your worried about, but I don’t think the dark really works, in my opinion

@Stephanie-H from what I can tell the wolf is breathing fog over the village. I’m not sure if there’s more to the story but that alone I think is a great idea.

@Stephanie-H To be honest at first it seemed to me like the wolf was tugging or pulling back at the clouds covering the village, as if it was a piece of cloth, probably because this is just a sketch and the details near the mouth are not clear right now, plus I have no cultural context about the Native American wolf spirit myth.
However, knowing that that is the story, I do think it's a really cool concept! You might just need to pay a bit more attention in the final piece to how you render the fog and clouds and make sure there is no ambiguity that the wolf is blowing the fog out. Maybe having some cloud swirls flowing outwards would make it visually clearer.

@Stephanie-H I like this zoomed in setup more. The wolf dominates the piece more – which I think works since it's the wolf's story. I know where to go first.
I'm not so sure about darkening out the top right corner. Darker areas like that are usually for things close by and obstructing the view. Maybe if I could see that was something hanging down it would make more sense. I like adding dark to the bottom corners, though, for something closer to the camera.
I'll be honest, because we're not detailed yet, I can't quite tell what's going on between the wolf and the clouds/fog. The close setup is compelling and interesting to me and I'm excited to find out.

Hi, I find the image intriguing. It does suggest a spirit but the story is not very clear to me. I notice that the fog gathers around the trees, does this mean something?

Regarding the composition, on one hand I like how the values are spread around the image, on the other though, I felt some confusion in reading the image and then I noticed that the mountains on the right seem to have inconsistent shadows… I mean, there is one with the left side in shadow, and another with the right side darkened. The darker line across the center looks like a river or a road… it has the same value as the mountains in the back, and maybe that is a bit confusing too for the eye? Hope this observations are useful! I want to find out the whole story

@Stephanie-H while I like the concept I think a dog spirit doesn’t make as much sense as a wolf spirit. Also I think it should probably be colored differently to make it clear it’s a spirit, right now it just says giant dog… also the prompt is an ink challenge, are you planning to convert to ink at some point?

@Stephanie-H I’m sorry i hope I didn’t sound too harsh! If you’re working traditionally to the end I would just keep going the way you have been and don’t try mess with too much. If you did have a means of working digitally it would be easy to adjust the color.

@Stephanie-H I appreciate your concept. It's unique and interesting, and it's drawing my curiosity. I also really like your painterly style. Here are some notes to consider as you fine-tune (please disregard if these were already mentioned in other comments):
-Why a dog spirit and this one in particular? I've heard of Dalmatians being a known dog worker/helper at a fire station, but this dog isn't that breed so I'm wondering if it perished in the fire? (I only mention fire station because you mentioned that there was a fire.)
-It's unclear to me whether the dog is spewing clouds, or sucking in clouds. Maybe look up pictures of kids blowing bubbles--that gentle pursing of the lips. And the clouds could start as thin tendrils, expanding as it moves farther out.
-The dog looks so sweet and cute. But it looks like a real dog, rather than a dog spirit. What if you made the dog white with touches of blue like the clouds, and semi-transparent? Maybe there could be tiny delicate star shapes defining the lines of its body? OR, you can make the dog a much brighter, more intense color than the rest of the painting, just differentiating it from the other colors so it's definitely conjuring up supernatural vibes. I'm thinking of some Chagall paintings.
