      Hi all,

I’m working on this illustration for the Folio Illustration Award (A cool, free thing to enter if anyone else is interested: https://www.foliosociety.com/usa/folio-book-illustration-award).

I’m having trouble making it look like the skeleton’s hair is tangled in the branches - obviously, I’m still rendering hair/tree. I’d be grateful for any advice to get it to look more tangled and stuck, slash any general advice.

      Thank you so much!

        Hi there mate!

Regarding "how to make the hair look more 'tangled' in the branches", I believe have a bit more pull should deliver that idea. Like if you have a pile of tangled headphone wires or girl's long hair, to really tell if it's tangled or not, you kinda need to pull those strings, so at least some of those strings might need to have tension on it (pulled straight while tightly wrapped around a few branches randomly maybe).

Made a few quick sketches since I was just coming off today's drawing session. But stylistically since your image is pretty illustrative, I'm not sure if this would indeed be a good idea, but you might be able to experiment with it a little bit.

Gesture wise, those strands of tangled hair might need to go to the back/neck area of the skull otherwise the head probably will need to tilt upwards since there's a pulling force... But this is really me nip picking.

Hope to see the final results 😃
