Good enough for portfolio?

I'm working on building my middle grade portfolio to illustrate book covers and black and white interiors. Do you think this image is strong enough to go in my portfolio? Does it look too dark? I keep making everything too dark accidentally, even though with this I tried to limit my values above black.

The prompt was "dancing in the rain." My story idea is that this is the future, the planet earth is almost a wasteland. The heat during the day is unbearable so people wear cooling units to keep their heads/ torso's cool. Several kids in one of the desert towns way out in the middle of nowhere put themselves to the task of building a cloud machine to make it rain. After many tries, finally, finally, it works!
