Another piece I’m working on for Christmas - a Ruffed Grouse for a family member who had a young one befriend him over the summer.

I’m going to put some grass etc. under its feet and add a little more definition but I’m wondering about the upper right. Is it too much white?

You could probably carry the yellow over a little more to the right. I don’t know if I would take it to the top of the page. Carrying it over more on the side may give that blank space a little more purpose. It seems a little off balance. You could crop it. I’m sure you don’t want to put the bird dead center, but it may just be too much space on the left. It can all change once you put in the grass as well. Did you leave enough room on the right to move the picture over? I’ve learned the hard way to make sure I leave a good boarder around my work. The sketch doesn’t always make the best layout. Sometimes you have to move those outside lines.

I imported it into Procreate to tweak and had thought of cropping it as you suggested. I also extended the yellow over some. Is this better? I’m not sure about the background — I was trying to lose the edge of the grouse’s back to make it look like it’s emerging from the woods/shadows but I don’t know that it was successful.

@demotlj I like it! Looks good. Continuing the yellow helped too. Once you bring the grass up to intensity as the bird I think you’ll get a sense of balance. I probably wouldn’t even do all the grass that intense. Just some and let it fade out.

Last tweak: I added a light shrub on the right to try to balance it. I’m not sure whether I’m going to keep it and since I added it in Procreate, I can delete it. Any opinions?
