I had started this for April's "Before the Moment." Finally finished and decided to share. I still suck at environment and hope to take Brian Ajhar's class one day Anyone have anything to share to help with environment appreciated falling.jpg

Hi @lmrush, environments are generally tricky to get just right, I think!

As for your picture, does the book cover say "Fear of Falling?" That's a neat detail. If the little boy is about to fall off the ladder and they are in a library/bookstore, I'm thinking it might be helpful to have a bookshelf prominently featured near the foreground of the picture. There is one where the boy is, but because we're looking at the side of the shelves, we don't get to see the books, besides the ones off in the background.

Maybe exploring this via thumbnails would be helpful! 🙂

Environments are my weak area too, so this is just my impression. I feel like you aren’t committing to the structure of your environment. There looks to be a second level of the library with a railing back there. That would be a straight line. You may want to render that straight line in low contrast so you don't draw attention away from the foreground, but is does need to be clear. Also the perspective needs to be consistent. All those bookshelves and doorways need to live in the same space. You may want to draw out a perspective grid to help keep everything in harmony.
Again, I am not an expert on environments, just my two-cents worth (and that price is probably accurate).
I really like these characters and the situation.

Ha, I love that the boy is holding a "Fear of Falling" book. A great concept!

I agree with @sketchbook re the perspective. I think the back wall and left side wall might be a bit off in perspective (where they align together) causing not quite enough depth imo. I hope this helps!

This piece is lovely! Nice irony in the book the boy is holding. I am including a link to youtube tutorial about creating perspective grids....I found it entertaining... AND useful.
