And it begins! I haven’t really used my brush pens much since last year’s Inktober so this is a nice refresher. I also feel much more confident with the strokes already than I did last year which shows some of the other pen control work has carried over. Still lots to improve on though so this next 6 weeks should be awesome.

@Braden-Hallett you're always good to start a group class-along here. And I'm tempted. I've been over in a different forum taking a few classes this summer (comics/storywriting) but they're wrapping up. I've been working on a 3 page comic strip-and boy but my inking could use some assistance.

If I do-it will be digital, on my Procreate. As usual, I'm searching for the "right" brush.

I'm using The Fading Edge-from Georg's megapack. It doesn't have quite as much pressure sensitivity as I want so I'm playing with the settings.

I'd love to hear from other digital inkers--what you're finding to work well.

I copied a random page from one of our old coloring books and filled in the spaces with my practice lines.

That's a really good idea! Cheap and easy to find and print out, too 🙂

@Bricz-Art Nice! You've got some great consistency goin' on there! Are you using a brush pen?

Wow, I am really shaky with a digital brush pen. I guess I really do need to practice. 7121f1a6-ae69-4fb5-9af4-cfb0f849b82b-image.png
I especially struggle with varying the weight of the line. Also, I did a self-portrait. (haha! I wish!)

                Thanks @Braden-Hallett
Today was a Copic multiliner that I haven’t had a chance to play around with yet. I plan to bounce back and forth between it and a couple brush pens I have to work on building proficiency with both.

@chrisaakins man, trying to play with line width in digital format for the first time or after a while off is super difficult. There’s just such a different from traditional to digital eh?

Kind of meditative when doing this on paper. I have seen the inking videos before, but when re-watching it, I realized a lot of excises can be used to practice with other art supplies, like pencil for example. It is about getting better with drawing in general :-). I think 6B pencil in procreate is very suitable for most of the excises.

Cool! I'm in! I'll start watching the first homework-video's tonight. I'll see if I want to work traditional or digital... maybe both :-).
Good idea to do linework everyday, I'll start that as well.

@Braden-Hallett at first I thought this would be a good opportunity to get beyond the sketch pencil on my ipad/Procreate and try digital inking, but now I see it as the perfect vehicle to work on fine motor control on paper. That became an issue for me 4 years ago, so I broke down and bought an iPad Pro. The undo/redo in Procreate made drawing a lot easier, but I have not moved forward much in regaining fine motor skill. The initial exercises don’t have the pressure of a product, but really help identify which movements and goals need most practice. I also need to learn to post struggles and be publicly accountable, so I am very happy you initiated this Braden! My daily practice will include exercises that require long lines, pressure and consistency using a technical or ball point pen for most.

I feel your pain 🙂 I find it a LOT easier to get a smooth line with traditional materials vs digital.

It's a great start, though! Those lines'll smooth out sooner than you think if you do them every day

When I do practice linework in the morning I call it 'self calibration' It is very meditative 🙂

I really like the fading line hatching in the bottomr right. Looks really neat!

Awesome! Certainly a great start 😃 . I think your hatching's bang-on. It's crazy how much of a difference a push vs a pull makes with those long lines, isn't it?

Here are some more lines and practice. I have always wanted to be able to use a brush pen to do the modern calligraphy but so far it eludes my skill. This line practice helps.

Are we posting our daily practice here? Or just once a week?

Ink warmups for today. Used the brush pen this time around. I must say, I’m quite pleased to see the improvement from the last time I used this sucker. I’m excited to see what kind of progress will come from daily work between now and the end of October.
