@Kris-Knight @Rich-Green @bharris @Rob-Smith @joanie-stone Thank you all for your positive and encouraging comments!
@Kevin-Longueil @Joy-Heyer @Naroth-Kean Thank you for your input too, yes I’ve decided I will change things with the jet packs….I figured out what was bugging me - they are shaped like modern jets but on an old train, it looks incongruous…
So I’m going to try re-imagine them as if they were made in 1854 like the train, and they’re going to be much smaller and emit pixie dust, so they’re like jets of magic dust….hopefully more subtle instead of massive bulb shapes and will incorporate your ideas… @Joy-Heyer of course you’re right that the reindeer use magic to fly, so a train could be the same…so I will see how that goes. If they still look odd after re-working them I’ll find another way
@Marsha-Kay-Ottum-Owen Thank you, I appreciate your positive thoughts

Well here goes, here's my updated piece. I went into the colouring stage aiming for the vintage/retro look, because I agreed with the commenters who said that might be really nice....but it didn't turn out retro at all! I think that was because I started with a watercolour base painting, carried on with digital and it evolved into a full watercolour/digital piece. Also I'd been watching Lee White's Let It Glow class and I was just so inspired to try something in a similar way...even though I told myself to think retro, I didn't really want to lose the watercolour texture once I had it in there.
I've thought about adding fairy lights a lot...decided against adding them yet because I was worried about 'over-illustrating' - Will and Jake were discussing it in a class, where you include too many things in one piece...still open-minded about it though. Suggestions/thoughts welcome!

@Dulcie I love the Northern Lights sky effect you have going on - so pretty! And I think you did a really nice job of making the rocket thrusters fit into the style of the train while still adding a fun magical effect. I like the happy elves and friendly Santa as well Very nicely done as always!
-
@Rich-Green Thank you, glad you like it!
I'm sure I can improve it but have been staring at it for too long to work out how. Glad the Northern lights came across - I wanted to heighten those but they mixed with the fairy dust jets too much when I tried it.
-
I love this so much @Dulcie! Very beautiful and like Rich said, the northern lights are a nice touch!
Santas home/workshop is looking a little dark/unfestive to me, maybe you could incorporate the fairy light idea on the house instead, or maybe add a wreath on there? -
@JajaJulie Thanks for the feedback! I like the idea of adding a wreath and making it look more festive. Originally there was going to be a window shining a warm light out onto the reindeer, I left it out because I wasn't sure if I should draw focus into the corner like that, but maybe I should reconsider.
-
I love the way you incorporated the magic and the mechanics of the boosters! It is really lovely!
-
beautifully done! love the light!
-
I agree with @JajaJulie about making the workshop more festive. Warm it up a little bit in that corner and you could add a small indication that the reindeer are sick like a blanket and tissues. Other than that I think it's beautiful!
-
@Dulcie I love that elf's face! Amazing job on the train and rockets!
-
@Joy-Heyer @Naroth-Kean Thank you
@gimmehummus Thanks for your thoughts - I will work on giving a more festive feel to Santa's house
@bharris Thank you! I would be so excited to be on a flying train, so I thought he should definitely look happy
-
Very nice love the reindeer their faces are my favorite part.
-
That's it game over, I am throwing the towel in! This is a great piece! It turned out great.
-
Beautiful work! I love the way you painted the train and your sky is amazing!
-

@Chip-Valecek Aww thanksThough don't throw the towel in, keep going!
@Thrace-Shirley-Mears @Rob Smith Thank you
@Damien-Rambacher Thanks, glad you like the watercolour in it. I'm working on a new version with that corner more festive, hopefully will be better -
I like how I can really feel the weight of those train cars--if that makes sense
