Critique request for a picture book piece

I am not very thrilled with the airbrushed (I did use an airbrush!) look of light and shadow. It is a night scene where the little girl drops her flashlight and it rolls under the bed. But as soon as I added the shadows and light the crispness of the lines disappeared.
Any tips on what type of brushes to use? Any tips to improve it, in general, are welcome. Thank you for your time. -

There's different techniques you can use to manipulate edges, but here are some short videos of the two techniques that I personally use the most:
