Hi! I've been working on the stylizing character class and on my own characters and I have really been struggling with costume design. Could you make a class on character design and how to make it fit with the time period, fit the personality of the character, and show the emotion and symbolism, and all that complicated stuff? This would be SUCH a lifesaver!!!

Great thread! thank you for asking this question, I too am more interested in Editorial as opposed to children's and I've gotten a lot out of these forums, but I have also been looking for more specific along the lines of what I'm interested in as well.

I can highly recommend Sterling Hundley's Ideation Lab 01 class if it's offered here again. It's a live class, so the real benefit is just getting the change to get his feedback and ask him your specific questions. He was a wealth of knowledge about the industry and even though the class is focused on how to generate ideas, he really takes his time in the live sessions and I found him to be very open and generous with his knowledge.

@xin-li Mine says the 2018 SCBWI Market Survey. I agree, it's like the editors don't want to be found - lol. I also find that some of the listings state "Art Director/Editor accepting art work submissions" but offer no contact information. sigh

Well I think you have an advantage because you know your traditional art so it will be easier to learn digital because you already know the fundamentals.I think no one tells you how long the digital art thing takes to learn it took me years, it is made out to be simple and it is not. You have made the right choice by taking lessons I stumbled about for a long time trying to do it all myself .good luck!

It might be fun if the man holding on (on the left) was popping through the cloud, in a whisk away movement.

I had issues with flys sucking of the paint from the paper too when I swatched a new water colour set. I have never seen insects “eating” paints before nor did that happen to me after this event.

It is weird that the insects got into your pallet. What kind of pallet do you use? I have go a Mijello pallet for my gouache paints that can be closed tightly. But I know that some bugs can squeeze trough the tiniest spaces which got me worried a bit. Maybe a plastic bag a seal the pallet away like the others suggest as well could help you.

Of course you should also check how they got into your house at first place. There might be sprays or something to keep all kinds of bugs out of your house.

I'm also in a Facebook group with illustrator artists, some of them are form my country, or even my city, and it's nice to share experiences live.

Oh man, I always have the 'ugly phase', so I really hate showing off my work during that time. I sometimes even get upset about it, and think that it wont get much better.

The trick for me is to just... not stop. Keep at it, and eventually you'll work it into something that you think is 'okay'... or even 'wow! this is better than I thought it'd be!'. I sometimes have a difficult time going back to a piece that I left in the 'ugly phase', so I tend to keep at it until there is at least one element of the piece I'm at least 'okay' with.

Maybe that could help for you?

There are a lot of things I'm not satisfied with but I think I'm just going to accept it and move on from this one heh 😊
