@Paul-Burton Wow, thank you for so much for such a thorough answer to the question. I'm just curious, aside from something like copyright infringement, what are reasons an illustrator could be sued? I'm at a place where I really only make a few hundred dollars here and there so I feel like I can't justify spending money to establish an LLC right out of the gate, but I also want to be safe if there's a real risk.

I have an old cs6 photoshop however it doesn’t function properly so I use Corel Essential 5. I like the natural brushes and in the future move to the Painter 🙂 .

Wow, this has been an enlightening experience even just to this point! LOL! We haven't even signed a contract and simply articulating the design/revision process together has been... interesting! I know the specifics of these things vary from field to field, but making sure we have the same understandings and definitions--both of us coming at this from a newbie/novice perspective (as they've never used an illustrator for their previous albums but photographers instead)--has been a wonderful opportunity for discussion! I'm amazed at how different priorities can be. LOL!

It's all good--no train wrecks thus far! It's just very interesting... Assumptions are tricky little things aren't they? 😉

@Coreyartus Thank you for such a comprehensive answer! You've framed it well, because it's sort of what I've been trying to do, but have been somewhat superficial about my approach. So I need to get more specific about phases and restructure the content from general topics like "characters" or "animation". Now to find what kind of words would be more fitting.

@Ryan1106 There are so many ways to make a website. You can use an all in one platform like Wix, Squarespace, etc. Portfoliobox is a service that's specifically for artist portfolios so that's really good. If you're resourceful and want to DIY it, you can build your own website with Wordpress. That gives you full customization power but it's a bit more complicated.

I had a Wordpress site for a long time but just recently changed to Adobe Portfolio. It's very simple and easy to use. It's free if you're subscribed to any Creative Cloud program, such as Photoshop. They let you build and host up to 5 portfolio sites completely free. There's an option to buy or connect a custom domain name to look a bit more professional (about $10-15 a year). I think it's the cheapest and easiest way to build a portfolio site so personally, that's the one I'd recommend.

I'm glad it looks tidy. 🙂 As for the sub-menu, I tried loads of menu styles for sectioning my portfolio to show more work (it's so tough to figure out that balance!) and so far this is the best--but I agree, it does make it easy to miss the sections. Perhaps I'll add some text on the portfolio page that elaborates about clicking to see more, especially for people not using a desktop.

I am struggling at the moment with even keeping the sculpture/creature design sections in there, to be honest. I love doing those things, but they are more "passion projects" and not something I foresee being able to actually get clients with. I am also worried that it will make me look like a jack of all trades, master of none type thing and maybe decrease my professionalism? Not sure. Don't want to confuse or turn away future clients.

I also worry that perhaps my style is too all over the place. I am trying to work on that, but it's tough. I'm definitely still in the stage of figuring out how I like to work. Time will fix that, I hope. But it'd be nice if things could look a little more cohesive.

This is an illustration for a lullabye book I plan to finish in the next year or so (I hope!) I have one more on the docket before it so....we'll see.

@kadelex Oh that makes more sense! Alright so 500 kb is small for an image, meaning they want small and light files for fast internet viewing. I suggest to keep scanning in 300 dpi just to have a large version handy in case you need it later, then resize a smaller copy for the contest. 72 dpi is the standard for internet only images, and if you get the image between 1000-2000 pixels wide you should be good 🙂 If it's still too big, try exporting in JPG and compressing the quality a little bit. I've noticed no significant quality loss when compressing between 75-100% quality.
