Hello!

I am following several "cross hatching artists" on instagram (jessespencersmith, erikosmithson, dava22, nicokkfoury, etc) and I was delighted to see Bryan the girl is now teaching on SVS!

I love this technique but don t know many children book illustrators who use it (except for Elise Hurst in her wonderful "imagine a city").
I'd love to have more references. Do you have any names to suggest?

I also know Alberto Varanda ("la mort vivante") but he is not a children book illustrator.

Ugh same here... i was sad to find out the pentel pocket brushpens are not waterproof so when I tried to use watercolor on them it turned into a mess! I started using “Dr. Ph Martins bombay black” waterproof ink.

The discovery of different tools is the fun part!

@jdubz Thanks, it's always good to hear about good software. Maybe, if I ever start bein more fully digital, I will check those out 🙂 Right now, I'm just playing arond I guess.

@Laurasketches Damn that sucks, maybe next year. They are going to release most of the talks online for everyone to see, it's just a matter of when. I missed so many good ones. As for the notes their a bit more personal, I do have some notes that I could share. I'll just have to clean them up and translate them into English.

I vouch for SVS set up, I think that would be sweet to get Three-point perspective in person and have questions answered in person. Maybe get a panel for it.

They did had a separate section for just portfolio reviews. Were you planning on doing it own your booth? I honestly think is a good idea, I'll line up for one fo' shitzle.

@Coley You have to manually type in random numbers from the random number generator that's included, and make sure the checkboxes are checked. Let me know if that does the trick.

Scratched this out with my finger on my touchscreen. Colored it with an airbrush. Just more practice, I can definitely work on the drawing but, just need to play a little each day.
So much to learn!

Hi @Kristin-Wauson ! Well, Inktober started as a challenge to get better with ink by a person who wants to get better in ink and can see himself doing professional work in ink.

The pressure is real because it became so big and everybody is doing it. But there is no "you should do it".. Everybody has its own priorities. So you don't have to do it. For me, I always work and try to get better in ink so I don't really see it as a challenge (the inking part - haha I am funny ink is always a challenge 🙂 ) and I don't do inktober for that very reason.

But.. there is the other side of the challange which is - drawing every day and pushing yourself creatively - to come up with good ideas every day which you are proud of. Which for me is far more harder than drawing in ink. So If I am going to do inktober it is because of that reason.

So if you want to do the challange...you can try it for that reason too... You can do the challenge in pencil 😃 the ink is just a hard medium that won't forgive you mistakes - and that will push you as an artist.

So those are my thoughts on this topic 🙂

I started out playing with stars in inkscape. It turned out into black shapes on dark green. I cut and pasted and rotated them in GIMP and drew a fairy on my touchscreen, filled with a bucket fill and then painted roughly over the parts. I played with a lot of filters and ended up wth some shadow and light stuff. Drop shadows and a couple different light ones which I can't remember now. I should probably write down the ones I know. It's not great, but I'm learning. Hoping t keep a hmemade looking style as that is what I like. I would have liked to make the wings more transparent. I need to figure out how to change teh opacity on just a portion of a drwing still. Thank goodness for google. Maybe next time.

BTW, feel free to give me some tips or even "assignments" to try if you like.

Anyone out there who can't afford, or doesn't want to pay for expensive digital programs, these are really pretty good. I found the Inkscape tutorials I like at TJ FREE Inkscape tutorials on youtube. They are nice for beginners like me. The lessons are not too long and give you enough to play around a while until you're ready for the next one.

Time to get off my butt and move a little! Good night!
