@VeronicaMui I think it's alright? As long as you alter a pic I think you're good.

@Melanie-Ortins Awesome advice. That's the exact strategy I use for portrait commissions, I'm not sure why I was so shell shocked when it came to a cover design 🙂 Of course it would work for that as well! I guess I'm still trying to figure out the right balance of "I need to make enough per hour to buy groceries" vs "no individual personal client is going to pay this much..." I'm narrowing the window.

I didn't think cover artists would get royalties for something like this but figured it was worth asking. Thanks a lot for your reply!

@Mary-Toth Your thumbnails are nicer quality than my finished product, haha! I love the one on the bottom left. The idea that the fairy is trying to figure out the plan, but that's kind of the trap, is great! Really cool ideas all around!

Hey thanks you guys I ended up giving the piece one more try. I simplified it and I’m working on clarifying my style. I, pretty happy with how it turned out. You can see the original in the very bottom of he August prompt post. 274564D5-DB5B-4B0C-ABA6-0013EBBFB1EB.jpeg

@NessIllustration Thanks, Vanessa! I think what you said about being transparent is the best way to handle such situations. I must admit I didn't think of it from the author's point of view if she'd already be getting pressed from the publisher. I'll maintain communication via the agent and stand my ground of not falling under the pressure of unrealistic deadlines. Thanks!

@carlianne That makes sense. Thanks, Carlianne!

      Hi friens,

I just wanted to get opinions on sites like hireanillustrator.com or childrensillustrators.com . For some odd reason I can't seem to find any unbiased information on this on the web (all I find are testimonials posted by those specific sites - surprise surprise they're always positive) but I was wondering if anyone here has actually had a membership on either of these sites (or something similar) and what your experience was like? Did you get return on investment? They're like 200-300 bucks which seems like alot but I mean if you get just one job from it, it might pay for itself? (Unless the only people hiring there are like self publishers with a budget of 500 for a 32 page book 😒 ) But anyways it would be super cool to see what someone who has actually used the sites have to say about it.

      Thanks in advance! 🙂

I assume you are trying to get children's book work. I think you are on the right track showing multiple pieces from the same project, but the main reason for that, I think, would be to show you can handle consistency of the same character throughout the book. In piece 1 and 4, I see the same girl, but almost with the same pose and I think in #4 she looks a bit younger. This is a really tough skill we all struggle with. the next three seem to be from the same story, but I'm not sure #7 reads as the same character from # 6 and 8 except for the hat. Again, he looks older in # 7 than in the other two. Maybe that is a direction you want to go: not just practicing that skill, but making pieces that show it to the best advantage. I love the aliens in #2 and the diversity of subject matter. I saw your "self portrait with dog" on the other thread and think it is a beautiful new direction for you. You've proved that even when the character is standing still, there can be movement and action. Maybe begin to push all your poses or to add more pieces with dynamic poses and action. Many of the pieces you have chosen are quiet or static moments. Action is an important part of narrative illustration. Even #2 with the aliens which I really adore poses the characters in a more sedate moment. As Brian Ahjar says, ask yourself what happens before and after! Great work

@gavpartridge that's why I referenced the rugrats episode where they basically have an intervention for the 3 yr old girl who's addicted to cookies 🤣 to this day I've never seen a better kids version of addiction and how well executed it was.
