Comics is a sequential art so you still need to show you are able to:

tell a story in images draw the same character and it would still look the same from panel to panel and from page to page. draw characters in different poses, mostly exaggerated draw people of different body types draw different camera angles. handle the text and balloons, handle sound FX, and show moods in color.

you can still team with others to create comics. let's say you specialize as a penciler, someone else will be the inker, another will do the flats and a 4th will do the colors...

Some comics are not even in colors, some are in ink only, or ink and ink washes like The Walking Dead....so I would argue perfecting proportions, anatomy and perspective is a MUST.

@johanna-kim I did think about adding some line work in the background, good to know my initial thoughts were correct. Never second guess yourself I guess.

@demotlj This sounds very much Tao, but really there is no rendering of light without proper rendering of shadows....Actually giving a sense of light in a piece has much much more to do with painting the shadows right than with anything else....
Don`t take my super quick paintover as a reference - it has still a lot of mistakes. There is a lot of „sphere tests“ out there: if you type that on YouTube I am sure you’ll find a lot of resources!

I haven't taken this one yet, either. I'm still working on the basics, but I will get to it eventually--there are so many classes I'm looking forward to seeing. I've been happy with all the classes I've studied so far!

@sarah-luann Thank you 🙂 This is great advice! My mentor told me that he'll start out giving me a lot of work to see what I can handle, so finding a good process to help deliver on time is probably some of the best advice you could have given me.

@jason-bowen Yes, I do think so. I can picture this being used in detective/mysteries books. Your style may be unusual but all you need is the right story.

I'm no good at promotion, either, so I also feel that marketing is the hardest part. Even when you have an audience built, sales still taper off fairly quickly and it's hard to keep the momentum. The self-published authors I've worked with usually do a lot of leg work talking with local bookstores, doing school visits, setting up at trade shows and book festivals, and so on. They say reviews on Amazon are also incredibly helpful, but it's like pulling teeth getting people to leave a review.

I haven't worked with any big publishing house, but I've heard authors say lately they've had to do more self-promotion because the publishing houses aren't promoting like they used to. I believe it was author Tim Wynne Jones that said that.

@smceccarelli Thanks, that was clear! I just want to make sure I get used to creating in a way that will eventually look as good as possible on paper. Also, I have a high definition pen display, so maybe that's why I can see the difference?

I suppose you could politely request (ie: beg for) a layered master copy of the piece you're studying so you could see the different layer effects and such. It would definitely help.

As to the endless combos of custom brush types and textures I think that's something you just have to play with (which I suppose is part of the point of a master study)

Thanks Lee, this is very helpful! I did re-watched the 3rd Thursday agent video. You mentioned having a budget for advertising and how some agents cover 0%, 50% and so on, so I wasn’t sure if it was a red flag that the artist might have to pay some promotion fees. I guess I'd rather have some promo/advertising fees than have a higher commission % with no promo/advertising fees.
