I have had a very favorable response to my treehouse painting on facebook and we have a Wild Bird Store down the road that I thought might like to sell posters of it. I was thinking of getting it professionally scanned and print a few to take over and show them. I'm a bit nervous about it and I don't know how much to sell them for, etc. Does anyone have experience with this? I need to be confident and promote it well...that's my biggest hurdle 🙂 I guess I can look up how much they sell for online....anyway, any thoughts on this are appreciated.

I figured I am okay at making characters but have no idea how to pose them. Posing Characters class might be the better way to go! 🙂

Thanks for your suggestions, everyone! I knew daylight/natural light was better for your eyes, but I never knew what to look for in electronic lighting!
This is a light I decided to try out... it's affordable, and has multiple light settings (which is perfect, because the sunlight in my room changes a lot over the course of the day.) If it turns out to not work for me, I guess I'll splurge on a nicer/expensive one. Just thought I'd give the cheap option a shot! I'll let you know how it turns out.

@jimsz , I never thought of checking Pantone for lighting tips, but I guess they would know! While I don't do much traditional coloring right now, I'd like to get back into using my markers, so decent lighting will be a must. Thanks for sharing those links 🙂

Hi all, I've been scanning my watercolours as JPEGs, but have recently found out that many other people scan as TIFF files.

If I were to use my scans for picture books what would be the right format to scan in?

Also, if I change my JPEG scans into TIFFs via Photoshop, would the quality of these new TIFFs be of the same quality as an image originally scanned as a TIFF?

and do you have any experiences/tips regarding scanning that you could share?

I really think this is down to your personal situation. It boils down to whether or not what you're getting from working in a larger format outweighs the potential costs associated with working larger. There aren't any rules, remember, only your own limitations. I work with watercolours, and until yesterday (!) I've been working on A4, because I couldn't print on A3 and the task of tracing out an A3 sheet made me recoil in horror. Now I have a printer, I'll work larger. Dotty's suggestion is a good one, I think. Find ways around it if the cost is prohibitive for you.

@sensesis One other thing: There is an illustrator whom we mutually follow one another on Instagram that does quite a bit of product packaging and has been doing it for a long time with major brands. We don't really know each other outside of being connected on social media; however, if he's not too busy and is willing to help, perhaps if you reached out to him he can provide some thoughts privately on billing & contracts for packaging work (his contact info is at the bottom of his site).

On my old website i made images available for wallpaperps for phones, ipads and desktop patterns for computers.

They are not difficult to create and part of the reason we are artists is to share what we create.

scanners are not that expensive to begin with. so I would save up for one and get it when you get a chance. 🙂 or even check a place like craigslist.

@hidakat Hi there - those are called "clipping masks" and you create them by hovering your cursor on the line between two layers while holding down the ALT key on PC or the Option key on a MAC. You will see the icon of your cursor change and then you click down.

The layer above will indent. And now anything you draw/paint on that layer will only appear within the areas of the layer below it. So that base layer become the shape of the clipping mask. You can add a whole bunch of layers above one layer and have them all use its clipping mask.

@evilrobot I'm using a Ugee UG-2150. I will be adding color to the pages after all the pages are inked.

Clip Studio Paint is a great program in its own right which does almost everything Photoshop does (and some things better). Krita is also fairly popular, though I don't have much experience with it. Unless you're already at a professional level, have a compelling reason to be using Photoshop and can easily afford the cost of extra software, I'd say just use what you've got.

@mattramsey Thank you so much for your comment. The client wanted to "pay me to do something I enjoy" apparently, and they wanted to pay $110 in total, but then said they were pleased so they ended up paying $137. Now I treated this job very much as an experiment as I decided to put away my shyness in bargaining (honestly they would not even be around if they knew what actual skills would look like).
Also, I am a firm believer of equal payments for same level of skills. Art is a skill that transcends the barriers of countries and in my experience, people willing to work for less end up hurting the industry. So I don't want to work for less as I build up my portfolio, as personal projects can do that.
I am really trying hard with my colour and lighting skills but finding it extremely difficult to grasp. But that is definitely one of the things that gets me excited about art.

I did some googling but I couldn't find the exact problem. After I updated to CC 2017, but before I updated the Cintiq driver, the cursor went nuts. It couldn't even be controlled with the mouse. Now there's just this annoying problem. My graphics card, which WAS a GeForce GTX 780, died right after the warranty expired (it was purchased refurbished). Figures. But that was some time last year so I've been running with the on board Intel HD graphics without any Photoshop problems until now. Maybe sometime after Christmas I can get another graphics card but I kinda doubt that will be possible.

I did read that the brush spacing might affect it but that fix didn't help. I also read about the pc confusing the mouse and the pen input, but that's not a fix because I don't want to turn off my mouse. I still use it. I didn't have any theme on my cursor, it was set on NONE, but I did change it to Windows system default. We'll see if that does anything.

Movavi, Camtasia, Powerdirector, Screencastomatic plus a couple of others 😉
