Armor. Canadian: Armour. With some amour thrown in for good measure.
Maybe it's the Canadian in me, but 'armour' and 'amour' are very closely filed in my brain. Thus, the armour on the amour.

Is the armour protecting the heart? Or does it need to come off to be able to fully love?

Perhaps both.
