Hey, everyone! I'm a beginner illustrator creating my 2nd entry for Critique Arena! Here are my 2 VERY ROUGH thumbnail ideas. Please give me any and all honest feedback!

I'm shoehorning this project to create an image for the classic tale "The Tortoise and the Hare."

Image #1 : As the race begins the Rabbit/Hare is laughing at the Tortoise (although we all know who gets the last laugh) while other forest animals are cheering them on.

Image #2: The Tortoise has just won the race! A simpler design with just the tortoise, trophy, and rabbit.

Please let me know which concept is better or if you have any suggestions. Thank you so much in advance!500x300.png

Awesome! Welcome to critique arena! My advice would be to decide which sketch gives you better story telling opportunities, and also which one you are most excited about creating. I think they both have potential. Really think about the emotions and attitudes of your characters and play that up as much as you can. Personally, I'm a little more drawn to your first sketch, because I can already imagine so much going on there. Maybe the spectators are all rabbits laughing at the tortoise about to race against their champion? Or maybe there's lots of rabbits at the lineup and just the one tortoise? Just play with it and see what you come up with. Best of luck!

@kirsten-mcg Ok thank you so much! You've encouraged me to dig a little deeper and come up with more of a story or a twist on the original.

@mcschweitzer I agree with what @kirsten-mcg said. Also #2 is more about the tortoise than the rabbit, so that's why I would choose #1.

@mcschweitzer going by the theme, #1 has my vote. But do think about the positioning of the hare vs the tortoise at this stage of the race. From your thumbnail the tortoise looks like it is already ahead of the hare even though they are barely at the starting line.

I think the perspective of where your "road" starts and where it goes will be very important to the success of this piece. Play around with where the elements are, scale, perspective, camera angle etc to pull the attention towards the hare, who is possibly way ahead of the tortoise at the start.

Right now these two thumbnails don’t portray a particularly interesting moment. I think the most exciting moment of a race is the moment just before the finish. I’d recommend creating more thumbnails. I’d say 15 at least. I recall Lee saying it’s good to do about 30. Personally I’ve never been able to do that many but I push for a few more each time I do thumbnails and it yields more interesting ideas so I highly recommend pushing yourself to make as many as you can!

@Griffin Thank you so much for the advice, and you were absolutely right. I completely reworked it and came up with a completely different composition in the end. I did a "modern take" on why the rabbit lost the race! I posted it on the main Rabbit Road Race thread. Wow, ok I did 10, but I can definitely see how 30 would have been even better. I appreciate you taking the time to give me feedback and it's so great to be learning more and more from the forums everyday!
