Hi, I don't know if you're still looking for art to critique, but if you are, I'd love some help with this piece. It's a picture book cover mock-up from my portfolio. Other than my terrible attempts at painting dappled sunlight, I can't figure out why the illustration's not working. Any help would be super appreciated!

@skeletortoise I don't know about the foreground, but that little throwaway scene in the background makes me laugh out loud!

                    How To Post Images
(There was a question on the HTFYA YouTube chat today.)

                    1. Click on the blue "REPLY" button at the upper right of the page.
This will open a pop-up window. You can type text on the left half (the right half of the window shows how your post will appear, since you can add images & formatting).

                    2. Click on the "Upload Image" icon:
                      Image Upload Icon.png
(If you hover your mouse over the icons, you can see the name of the icon.)

                    3. A window will open to select a file. Navigate to the saved image, & double click or select it and click "Open".

Done! (You should see some text appear on the left side of the comment window, and the picture you selected should show up on the right side of the window.)

You can include text before &/or after the image. (To avoid short bits of text next to your image, make sure to start a new paragraph before inserting the image (by pressing "Enter" or "Return" on your keyboard, & doing the same again after your image.)

Click the blue "✓Submit" button to post.

(After you have posted your comment, you can edit it by clicking the vertical 3-dot menu icon "︙" at the bottom right of your post & selecting "✎Edit".)

I illustrated a (self-published) kid's book a couple of years ago, here's one illustration which I consider to be among the weakest.

Background: The characters put on a "Wizard of Oz" school play. Off-stage, a character with magical powers creates a real-life tornado to make the play more exciting, which takes everyone by surprise. This illustration is meant to convey the fever-pitch of chaos that occurs in the auditorium, as the tornado snatches up objects from the audience -- grandma's dentures, the Principal's toupee, the Superintendent's pink purse, etc. I will say the illustration demanded a level of technical skill that was beyond me at the time, and I'd be grateful to anyone willing to "rip it apart" so I can do this better next time!

the illustration that made it into the book (yikes):
                              03TornadoRGB.png

                              another composition attempt:
                              rough tornado2.png

(Middle class girl in fancy mall, She's at the eating portion with lots of decoration, She was surprised to see cristmas tree in summer so she decided to take a selfie)

Made the character with colors, but for the background i wanted to do grayscale version first and then color. The background is not looking as I thought.
I'm a very begginner to this, and it's my first illustration for childrens book but I do know how to use photoshop and have some drawung skills. it'ld be really helpful if you make an critic on this.

Adjusted it a bit, played with light and shadows also recolored it, It's much better now, but I still want crits on this for further improvement,
Also need advise for beginners I can make a full page like this but many books include creative graphic design which I've no experience on.

Here! I'll add this to the pile. Hope it comes in handy! Loving HTFYA. Hoping you keep up that monthly draw-overs & drawing crits, as an ongoing promotion of SVSlearn and the How To Fix Your Art booklet, once it's done.🤞
