Share July HTFYA Ideas & WIP - (Food Truck)

@jahn It seems reasonable to assume that Rhonda is professional and responsible. To me, it would make sense if one of the forest critters, like a raccoon, was in the back of the trash truck opening the sealed bags and distributing the spoils to his buddies.

Hi there people!
Okay I’ve missed two prompts and I’m trying to get one in for this prompt. I’m playing around with 3 concepts and I think I know which one I favor but I wanted to hear your opinion. These are concept only, not layout, story design etc. appreciate any feed back. I’ll be narrowing it down tomorrow or the next day if you want to put in your “vote
I want your opinion on which of these three concepts I should move forward with. Don’t judge layouts etc, just concepts, thanks
1- floating meat boat serving fishing boats
2- turtle pulling a yeti cooler to serve frozen treats to the desert in animals
3- The witch from Hansel and Gretel giving away free samples with a path leading back to the woods for “ more” -
@jahn
Hi Jahn, first off, I think concept is great and I know you’ve put a lot of time and energy into this. I’m going to add what I think Jake, Lee and Will would say. The story telling isn’t clear enough. I know what’s happening but if I didn’t know the prompt I’d just say “ a truck is dropping stuff/garbage off it in the woods” Are the animals disgusted that her truck is dropping stuff in their forest? I can’t see facial expression or body language. If they love this food truck shouldn’t they be excited, maybe carrying baskets to collect stuff up in, or even wearing things they picked up from her last drive through? I think a couple coming out from across the way would be good too so we could see their excited faces. Maybe loading up a wheel barrow with stuff. I hope I’m not saying too much. I’ve just watched enough of there podcasts so I’m giving you a friendly heads up. -
Unfortunately I will not be able to finish my illo (see above) in time for HTFYA because I now have a broken right elbow. It's going to be a loooong summer!
-
@Larue The Hansel & Gretel one has a dark sense of humor that makes me laugh. At 1st glance it's my favorite. The only thing is, it's almost like the house itself is already like a food truck? In that both are a lure...
The turtle is cute but I feel like the guys will say it's not different enough.
The meat boat has potential. It reminds me of my husband whenever he comes back from Finland. "Anything but salmon!" Of course it all depnds depends on the execution. You'd really want to play up the differences, show them pocketing loads of cash, etc.
Good luck!
-
@thomas-young That is a good idea, I'll add that
-
@Larue oh yes, thanks for pointing this out. Do you think if I added a sign that said "Landfill" to imply she is headed that way would help make it more cohesive?
Initially I wanted the animals to look "realistic" but that might not bring as much story-telling. Whereas if I gave them more eager or hungry poses and expressions or had them carrying items they found that might help make it more clear. -
@Larue I would say Hansel & Grettal idea is the most funny and with a twist of dark humor.
-
@LauraA bummer! Hope you heal quickly!
-
@LauraA OH NO!!! Get better soon! Dang it!
I still want to see you finish this sometime. I’ll say for myself, I’ve gotten inspiration from Critique Arena and HTFYA and started a few pieces that I didn’t finish in time. BUT, I think I’m going to make time this summer to finish some of them, and I’ll share them with the group when I do.

Here's my first rough sketch. Not too sure if it's tickling my fancy yet...

Late to the party... Again. Trying to make this one using my preferred process of using a traditional pencil drawing first. My idea is a food truck selling "Food for Thought". Got to feed the mind too! -
@Sarah-VanDam I know, right? Once we finally get the idea down, we almost have to finish! Please do share. I looked at your site and the work is very nice!
For me, it may be fall before I can draw again, but I'll try to use the down time to study and write (via speech dictation).
-
@Gabby-Correia Love the tank! My seller is also a mermaid (at least part time), so I was thinking through ways to show a hint of tail.
-
@MarcRobinson Great design and concept! What will the food look like?
-
-
@MarcRobinson oooh love the details so far!
-
@LauraA thank you. I'm going for a traditional "Gypsy" style caravan with light bulb themes. I'm going to try and incorporate a joke in there somewhere, but I'll sort that during the painting phase.
-
@Gabby-Correia thank you, Gabby.
-
@LauraA
Well that sucks! I hope you heal up quickly! Very frustrating:( Your art will always be here,as will we. -
Loving everyone's ideas!
So I'm slightly guilty of changing the prompt a bit with this one.
I've ended up rethinking my story to be from the point of view of Scully Seagull who just wants a decent meal. He's tired of circling dumpsters and wants to teach his fellow gulls some proper table manners
The food truck is like no other because the pasta is being rolled fresh on the top of the truck and falling directly into the pot below with the work of these cute kids
I'd love to hear your thoughts even if I can't change all that much at this point because of time and working traditionally - there are already so many layers of paint on this thing haha
