Hello. My name is Lisa and I am artistically isolated. Admittance is the first step to recovery right? Lol
I am 48.83 years old. I have been making art for everyone consistently since I was 12, but have only recently admitted to myself that yes I am an artist (thank you Will Terry) because I have not become what I once dreamed of becoming, an illustrator. One unfortunate day in junior college that dream was squashed by a man telling us that none of the people in my class would ever make it as an illustrator. I believed the A-hole. I earned a BA in fine art and aside from doing graphic design for employers and art for friends and family I have done nothing with it. I lived an hour away from school so I never developed artist friends outside of school. My friends and family are supportive, but I NEED art people. I need unbiased people who will give me tough love and truth so that I can improve. I have had my face pushed up against the glass of my mortality*, I will no longer waste my life. I know I am late in the game, but I am determined.I am not a close talker and I have good hygiene =)x.
I am a fairly normal person who is more than occasionally sarcastic.

Hi Lisa! I think you will enjoy being part of the forums. Everyone is very helpful and friendly. People are happy to give critiques & give great advice that is straightforward & honest without being harsh. Everyone is very encouraging no matter what level you are on with your art. I feel like I have learned and benefitted from both giving and receiving critiques.

@burvantill welcome to the forums, i have found many friends over the years being here. Some come and go as they do in life but there are a few that are very regular and others that are starting to become regular users. And some come back after being gone awhile and that warms my heart.

Hi Lisa! Welcome to the forum and happy to consider myself your art friend! You made me laugh already with your puns
I am 45.9 and I decided to move into illustration at 39. And now, 6 years after that decision I actually work as illustrator practically full time. So let me tell you two hard truths that apparently nobody has ever bothered to share with you: a) it´s never too late and b) you can make it at anything if you put in the work needed. Everybody who says the contrary is just a shameful champion of the „fixed mentality“ - i.e. the kind of people that put Galileo on trial.
I`ve read „The Emperor of All Maladies“ (I was a research scientist in Pharma in my previous life) and consider it one of the best books of all time - that quote made me smile too. Maybe you should read (if you haven’t already) „The subtle art of not giving a f@§k“, by Marc Manson: it also spends a whole chapter on the realization of mortality and its consequence on the way we live.
