The Moment Before My Mom Left WIP
-
@marine Awe, Thanks girl, Sorry about your mom. I feel ya there. It will get easier.
I'm still up in the air about how i'm going to render it. I would like it to be a soft light for sure, i'm thinking I might try something new. Maybe mixing my sketch and water color style with my graphic style. but its kinda scary and would probably take a while. But i'm sure with peeps like you helping and giving input, I'll get through
-
@Squirrelsize Thanks
Experimenting on the style of your illustration is a great idea and I'm sure here on Svs is the good place to do so. And I've seen your account, you're multi talented! So impressed by the goat sculptures!
-
@marine Awe! Thanks! I love working with my hands
I'm gonna start another goat sculpture set soon. But this time I'm changing up the subject to Autism awareness instead of Cancer. My Cousin has Autism. I'm excited for it!
Okay, you convinced me! I'm gonna try a new illustration style! I'm a little nervous, but I think it will be a good learning experience.
-
@Squirrelsize - the small details like including the warm embrace from your mother and the flowers on the bed are just lovely. I'm really loving the middle/most recent version. I think zooming-in was a really good choice and brings in the best of all versions.
-
@djly Yey! Thanks to you all giving me tips, Its coming along
-
Played around with some color studies, this one is my fav so far. Anyone have any color suggestions I should try?
-
Here is another color study idea! What do you all think about the gray with a pop of color? I think it works better with the subject matter vs. the colorful one. Vote which you all like: Color or Gray?
-
@Squirrelsize I vote for color; the faces are sad enough for me, but through the color it has some little happy moment for these two characters.
-
@Squirrelsize I vote for this warm sadness, the second feels too cold and more of an after than a before. But I think the second one shows more of an unsettling grief.
-
Okay, I have one more color idea.
-
Compare and contrast:
I do really like #1, but just a little worried its too bright? -
@Squirrelsize I am still at Nr. 1, warm colors, last warm moment, but maybe Chip is right.
-
@Squirrelsize I actually like #2, I like the cool colors.
-
@Squirrelsize This is very impactful. I think #2 suits the subject matter and story best.
-
@Squirrelsize
I still like #1 it's unexpected and there is life even if it's ending.
-
@MichaelaH @Chip-Valecek @ErinCortese @Heather-Boyd Hahahaha, Looks like #1 and #2 are both liked a lot, at least we can rule out #3. I'm gonna start working on drafting up a more detailed sketch and then go back to playing with colors. Thanks you all, a really appreciate the input
Meanwhile, fellow art peeps, keep voting away!

@Squirrelsize So sorry for your loss. I lost my dad to cancer ten years ago. He passed away in bed in my arms. I still miss him. Sniffle.
I think with her hand on the shoulder it looks more like she is napping. Maybe holding her hands in her lap? I like #8 because the eyes of baby goat looked so full of sorrow. I think enlarging the eyes a bit like in #8 would capture that. I am loving your work. -
I got some sketching done this weekend, not as much as I would like. (I've been spending all my extra time getting ready to go camping next week). Anyway, I'm not sure if I want to keep the lamp in the corner, I've redrawn it several times but it doesn't seem want to fit into the composition.
What do you all think I should put in the corner?
I was thinking about maybe added some books or a bookshelf. Reading was my moms favorite thing to do.I put twinkly lights up around the top as a secondary light source.
I decided to try added a small vintage chair for little Squirrel/Baby Goat (Hahaha) to sit on.

@Squirrelsize when i was with my Mom at the end there was always a card that someone brought, or flowers in various stages of wilting. When I was drawing in a sketchbook I bought just for that summer I tried to draw every plant, it was a lot and it was hard watching them. Same with glasses of ice water. Just refill it and watch it melt and refill it over and over again because that's the only thing useful feeling I could do
So yeah I vote flowers or water or a card. You have really captured the right emotions here. I hope you have fun camping!!
-
Thanks @Heather-Bouteneff ! Wow, I didn't even remember all the cards my mom received until you mentioned it. I think a bunch of cards would be great to add in, maybe in the corner taped on the wall. A glass of water would be good too! Very helpful tips
Hopefully I'll have some time to work on that tonigh
