@arent-draper that’s a good idea. My November is full but I may be able to swing four. I’m gonna think on that. 👍

@Heather-Boyd said in Picture book Nanowrimo. Who's in?:

I’m working on people and character studies in November

Me too!!! Do you want to share with each other or Start a thread? 😃
My main focus is going to be master studies of faces and bodies of illustrations that I like the look of. By the end of November I want to have a grasp on a consistent style of drawing people. Do you have a lesson or book that you are going to follow, or are you self teaching?

@Braden-Hallett This sounds really cool, and super great of you to dig out some exercises and stuff. My November is a little crazy but I'll join in when I can.

@Braden-Hallett I have written a bunch of stories during the last 12 months or so. They are not good text yet, but I believe there are some good ideas in them. I feel like I know what to do to break down the process of making an illustration after Lee & David's class during this spring. But I am having a hard time taking a rough idea to a finished text, the same way as a rough thumbnail to a finished illustration.

I have made 2 attempts to do picture dummy book in the past, and could not finish them because I started doubting about the story. Now I am doing a dummy book for the 3rd time with one of the stories, and I started to have doubts again...

If you have some tips for writing that you can dig up from your old notes to share, that would be fantastic.

Wow this is really interesting. I do have few stories tho that I’m trying to polish. I’m still a long way from finished tho. I’d love to what you guys come up with.

@burvantill Absolutely a thread and when we post if post on Instagram tag each other.

                1. This is my thought. I am finishing up Posing Characters class. I may add the gestures class and probably the class on Stylizing Human Characters.

                2. I have been looking and drawing like legs and feet and some hands from life and references too this past month. Just to really desensitize my fear of drawing people. That’s why I have been trying to add people characters to my Inktobers. Those elements will continue, because I have found the “bean” template very helpful to understand the frame work of the human body, conscious of the silhouette.

                3. I had set up a rough Pinterest board on character designs that I have liked for a while on the basis of use of shapes, angles, line quality, shading the sort. And with the elements I like to do studies of them. Example below, shapes and angles:

                EAA22964-8654-4FF7-B44C-4D1F64C9A83F.png

                1. And I was thinking of collecting famous characters like Arthur and Merlin, Little Riding Hood etc.. to see how people interpret and approach the character.

I’m not necessarily sticking to children’s illustration. But I will try sticking to black and white. This is how my brain ideas work. I have to mix elements I need with elements I like.

And when it comes to character designs I love science fiction a lot and fantasy, and period work. I really like how clothes help define a person.

                AA7483CD-B6D4-4CA6-958E-C26D86F2DF7D.png

This isn’t a drawing but I like sourcing ideas from many places. I like this guys expressive posture the most, and his helmet and tech armour.

                1. Anyways. I really want to experiment and draw the characters I am inspired to create. I like redemptive characters, and I love thinking about why a character is the way they are.

                So short yes to thread!

                    @Braden-Hallett ,
12x12challenge is to complete 12 picture book drafts in 12 months, not finished manuscripts. To be finished it probably has to go through several rounds of critiques which may not be possible in a month.

@Braden-Hallett Braden-you're always hosting the best parties here on SVS.
I'm thinking about doing Lynda Barry's book (she has a new one coming out on making comics on 11/6-but I'm thinking of starting with her Syllabus book)--which is simple drawing but more about story--so I think I'll see if I can blend that with the prompts you provide here.

I'm such a rebel when it comes to following the rules!

Meanwhile-I heard about this tool for helping generate stories-it looks intriguing.

I think I will give Lee's version a go, then I can flesh out any I think have potential. Hopefully I will be able to get some done in my down time at work every day! It would be helpful to have maybe a one word prompt list that people can use if they're feeling uninspired. It would be interesting to see how everyone interprets the prompts differently.

I'll be a bit late in starting this regardless, as I'm on holiday till November 3rd!

@Braden-Hallett I totally accept the challenge, but in the Lee format :P. I really want to get some stories going so this will be good brainmuscle exercise! I was think of making December the month I can actually flesh out one or two of the stories written in november ^^.

@Braden-Hallett were you planning to give each word or phrase or idea for the story each day or like monthly challenges altogether? Thanks

@Heather-Boyd I think I'll post a prompt a day. That gives us some freedom to change things up (today it's a prompt someone suggested, this other day it's this crazy picture I found) 🙂

Okoodokee ladies and gents! I'll post two threads sometime tomorrow. One for resources and prompts, and one for discussion/sharing and such 🙂

It'll be interesting to see how writing 15,000 total words across 30 different ideas compares to 50,000 words!

I can write something everyday and I'm not sure how long or what form it will be but it would certainly be good for me! I'll agree to that much. Prompts or story starters could be helpful!
