October WIP: Save the Castle!

@theprairiefox I really like the concept! Lots of story telling. And Frankenstein's expression is absolutely on point (so... so bored... lol)

My biggest concern is that right now our good doctor could just be leaning on a podium instead of at the controls. He doesn't seem connected to what's goin' on.

I kinda wanna see one or more of a few things:

• Frankenstein removing some plugs/doodads from the freshly revivified pooch being held by penny.

• The doctor's hand on a large control lever/switch showing he's at least doin' some on/off action

• tubes/wires/connections running from the doctor's controls to the table.

I really REALLY like the concept

One of these days I'll have to ask you about your process for laser cutting your printing plates. Seems like a really cool method.

• A crezzy science gizmo over the table that looks like it could bring things back to life.

@Braden-Hallett thanks for the input... all good stuff. I will definitely add a bunch of crazy details.

On the dog, I was fixated on the plug coming from the neck and it is not a good angle to show that from. But I think I can add stitches and stuff. I will play with that more.

You are so good at adding details... mine always come later in the process.

@theprairiefox this is such a cool idea, I love the fundraising thermometer poster in the background.

I agree that making the Dr more involved in the levers and gadgets of the resurrection process would be great. I thought I'd mention also that it took me a while to realise the people in the back were queueing. Possibly it will just be clearer in the finished image but you could also consider maybe adding a few more people or a velvet rope / "please wait here" sign at the bottom of the stairs to make it an obvious line of loads of people.

@neschof good idea on the rope and sign. I like it. I will definitely add them to the next version.

I was thinking about adding a couple more people as well, just need to come up with more dead pets to draw!

Here is the updated inks... I will be finishing it with a lot of crosshatching to put in the value. But I think I added in all the thoughts you both had. Let me know if you see anything more to add/change.

Here is my final. My intaglio plate did not cooperate, so I had to finish it digitally. I will try again. I really want to get my intaglio plates working from the GlowForge!

@theprairiefox Nice! I get a one panel comic vibe (kinda like the far side ) from this one with the thick border. It almost needs a hilarious caption underneath.

I like how the doctor's hair kinda resembles brains!

I can't think of anything to add at this point. Too bad you couldn't get the glow forge to cooperate.

@Braden-Hallett yeah, I haven't pulled an intaglio print off with it yet... just got to keep experimenting. I used an acrylic plate this time, but I think the engraving was too deep to get it to work.

I am going to cut a shallower plate and see if I can pull it off. If it works I will post a copy.

@TessaW well, I finally got to see the master printmaker I have been learning from and we got an intaglio print to work that was cut from the GlowForge! So wish I could have submitted this one instead of the digital finish. It is so much richer...

@theprairiefox That's awesome! I'm glad you were able to get an intaglio print out of it. You were really successful in getting the digital version to have a traditional grit to it, but this latest version really has that richness you mention.

@theprairiefox I don't know what an intaglio print is but this looks almost embossed? - I would want to run my fingers over the lines!

@neschof Intaglio is used to describe lots of different types of printing; drypoint, etchings, and aquatints are examples. It basically means you use a wet piece of paper and the ink is down in the lines on the plate. The press pushes the paper into the plate to pick up the ink.

Relief printing is the other kind (linoleum cut, woodcut, wood engraving) in that type of printing the ink is on the top surface of the plate and paper only picks up that part of the print.

I really like intaglio because of the "plate tone" the shadows and the 'richness' you get from wiping the plate to varying degrees.

Quite often the paper will come out 'embossed' as it will take the shape of the plate as well.
