Magazines to submit to?
-
I'm sending a promo postcard to Cricket Media, but aside from them and Hightlights Magazine, are there any other magazines you've submitted to? All the info on kidlit411.com about magazines is geared towards writers.

An addendum: Cricket Media has a bunch of imprints, but their submission guidelines say to send postcards to the art submissions coordinator and it's the same mailing address for all of the imprints. Do I just send one postcard, or do I send a postcard to each imprint even though it's the same address for all of them? I don't want to annoy this person.

@Laurel-Aylesworth That is an excellent question. I’ve had this same question. Logic says only send the one, but whoever said the world is logical. Maybe some higher ups can shed light?

I've submitted to Storytime magazine before - just through their regular contact email - and got a response from the art director Definitely worth submitting, they DO check their inbox hihi

Just as a heads up, there was a discussion today on twitter about Cricket's non-payment (or rather LATE payment) of illustrators. Apparently, they are know for taking a year to 15 mos to pay on an assignment. It's made me rethink submitting, or at least go in with my eyes open that it is a LONG process. (To be fair, it wasn't a non-payment, but IMO, 15 mos from a magazine should almost be classified as such). And this covers all their magazine imprints.

@Joni-Nemeth Thank for the heads up! 15 months is just insane. Normally, invoice terms in publishing are 30 days and sometimes 60 days.
-
@burvantill Good idea. @Lee-White Do you have any insight as to how many postcards should go to an umbrella publisher with multiple imprints?
-
@StudioLooong Thank you! I don't think any of these are listed in the Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market.

@Joni-Nemeth wow! But I guess I'm not surprised. I'm a writer and artist and earn money from both; sometimes I see payment within 30 days, but sometimes it takes too long. My latest magazine article was approved for publication October 2018 and is going to print January 2020 with payment following. Leanin' Tree greeting card licensing royalty checks can take over a year to go out after the designs are contracted/approved.
