Critique for Greeting Card Design

Hello all! I have just finished up an entry for this contest: https://www.gallerycollection.com/greeting-cards-scholarship.htm
The winner receives $10,000 so i am feeling the pressure haha. Here is what I came up with:
Definitely need some guidance! The past winning entries look nothing like this (you can see them on the scholarship site) so I am feeling a bit unsure about submitting this! Any feedback and thoughts would be appreciated!!! -

@Amelia-Bothe I think it is a really fun and but image! Really beautifully rendered.
The one thing I would try is to make the background a bit more cool in color so that your characters which are very warm can pop out more.
But it is lovely!

I looked at the previous winners and I think you could definitely win with this piece! So adorable. I'd buy that card!

Amazing work! I definitely think your work is on par with (if not better) than previous winners. My only thought is I’m not sure what the occasion would be for the card? (Though this is coming from a person who never buys cards so sorry if it is obvious to others

I think it’s beautiful and my only suggestion is as @carlianne said, the background detracts from the characters some. You could just eliminate the background because lots of greeting cards are characters on a white or plain background. Good luck - if you don’t win, you should sell it yourself.
